| Breeding yorkies with bad patella Reputable breeders should check for health issues. According to research most good breeders would not breed if the bitch has a bad patella. |

| I was shocked to find the there are "reputable" breeders and even show breeders that will breed dogs with grade 1 and 2 LP.

| In my humble opinion, no reputable breeder would ever breed any dog of any breed with known genetic defects. Some defects can be determined through genetic testing, others are the result of combining genetic markers and weaknesses when certain lines are mixed. If all registries such as AKC, CKC, etc. required testing of all breeding stock prior to registering their offspring, perhaps we would have healthier dogs with fewer genetic defects. But then again, registries, breeders, medical tests, etc., are only as accurate as the people behind them are honest. |

| I wonder if it would get better if show dogs where checked and it was one of the things that could take points away if it would get any better?

| Before being allowed to enter a conformation show, proof of soundness and health should be required for all dogs and bitches. There are two major problems that I see, but there are probably more.... 1) It would increase the cost of showing tremendously and discourage many up and coming exhibitors from entering the show ring 2) Because conformation shows are so political, it would be hard to find non-biased veterinarians to do the vetting. |

| Most or many dog show have CHIC clinics that breeders/show people can use to document soundness. The evaluations are done by veterinarians who are specialist is the area they are examining. Those vets are not judges at the show. Caninehealthinfo.org YTCA is now supporting DNA testing etc. many faults do not show up in testing, as chantriesmom pointed out,and breeders will continue to breed a dog is known cardiac issues that done show up until a year or two later. So bottom line is integrity and checking out reputation.

| Bottom line IMHO is things will remain the same. There ARE reputable breeders and people who really care will seek them out. The major problem with our society is people are gullible and fall for the most idiotic marketing and pay ridiculous prices for dogs that are not even standard. It is just that people want what they want...and don't care or even THINK about how the poor animals are bred and whether or not they are healthy. People have been trying for years to educate the public and it falls on deaf ears. Not all thank God...but, as long as there are people who will pay, there will be greedy breeders who will fulfill that want.

Number 2 ... just as in anything where people are involved as judges. I always liked the saying in track & field...."the clock doesn't lie".

| It seems sometimes emotions play a major portio of the pet decision — maybe even to the impulsive buying point! They are so gosh darn cute that there is not though about how much the health of this puppy is going to cost. And, of course, the unrepudavle breeders are not honest. Like LadyJane said, we keep beating our heads against that wall trying to educate!

| All but one of mine came to me that way. There are sadly an extreme amount of yorkies dumped on a daily basis.
