| Wookie Being Spayed Tomorrow We're worried. Of course we're worried, she's our baby, but we know we're doing the best thing for her. It's just she's so young, only 5 months, but it does seem to be recommended now to have pups spayed before their first heat cycle, so we've taken the plunge. We'll also ask the vet to take a look and remove any baby teeth that seem to be causing her a problem , although we haven't noticed any issues ourselves. I've booked today off work so I can make sure she has a good feed around 6.30pm, as she can't eat anything after 7pm. Tomorrow is Pete's day off, so we'll both take her to the vets in the morning, then he will collect her once she's awake enough to come home. He has booked Thurday off, and I have booked Friday off, so someone will be there to keep an eye on her through until next week. She will hopefully be over the worst by then. We've got a couple of onesies to try to stop her from worrying her stitches, and will ask about pain meds in the morning. For those of you who have gone through this, is there anything else we should consider? |

| I was super worried when our Pixie had her surgery. Surprisingly, she recovered better than what I expected. I gave her pain medication only 2 days. I got onesies instead of the cone so all the time she was able to rest comfortably in her bed. She never took it out although she figured out how to take her shoulders off. The first day she slept a lot and didn't ate much but she walked around a little bit without difficulty. The next day she was acting completely normal. The third day she was trying to jump to the couch! Our problem was trying to keep her calm and not jumping! Good luck! |

| My first two puppies I felt the same way,too tiny, just babies, so I didn't have them spayed, when one was 13 yo she died a horrible, painful death before my eyes, Pyometra, her uterus filled with puss, erupted, puss went into her blood stream, the vet gave her a full hysterectomy and sent her home. For 9 days she suffered and then died. 6 months later my 2nd one showed signs of pyometa, I rushed her to the vet, full hysterectomy, sent home, lived for 6 months then passed away.My next 2 female puppies tiny or not, were spayed before first heat. I wouldn't want anyone's baby to suffer like my first one did. Spaying your pups is the BEST thing you can do for their health.

| So we dropped Wookie off at the vets this morning, and she is probably being spayed as I type this. She was her usual, lovable friendly self to the vet, although she did look a bit worried when we walked out and left her. We know getting her spayed is the best thing for her.....so why do I feel such a traitor? The house is so empty without her too. Thank you, yolymary and matese, for your replies. They don't make me feel like any less of a traitor, but they reaffirm our decision. |

| We all feel the way you do, they are tiny little babies and we love them so much we don't want them in any pain, that's how I felt many years ago and did not have mine spayed. You will be amazed at how fast they bounce back, you will have your hands full trying to keep her calm lol. Have NO feelings of being a traitor, you gave her a GIFT of a longer and healthier life. You did the BEST thing for her believe me. Hope you get her home soon, they become such a part of us when they are not home seems like a part of us is missing.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You are doing the best thing for your kiddo, trust . I know it's scary...believe me, I do. So, make sure you go home with pain pills *and* have a pain plan in place IF/when her pain is not being managed sufficiently for her (especially if your vet is closed after hours!!!).

| Thank you so much for all your good wishes. I'm happy to report that Wookie is home, and absolutely fine. I never want to go through another day like yesterday. What made it worse was having to go to work, so I wasn't able to collect her from the vets. I was checking my e mails every five minutes at work until I heard from Pete that she'd come through the op fine, and he could pick her up in a few hours. I was also really surprised and moved by the fact that EVERYONE at work came by at some point to ask how she was. She's a little bit of a celebrity at work, and everyone knows her. When I got home, she was standing up in her pen, a little bit wobbly, but as soon as she saw me she made her way out to give me kisses, little tail wagging away. She also then had a drink, and some of the poached chicken and rice I had prepared ready. She was clearly still a bit woozy, but she was also clearly still our Wookie! This morning, I was woken up by a wet nose snuggling under my chin. Pete had brought her upstairs, and she was completely Wookie again. She's bright, alert, has scoffed a big brekkie, been outside for a slow amble and a pee, and doesn't seem bothered by her wound at all. The vet provided a pain killer, which she has had this morning, and all seems well. |

| Took Wookie for her post-op check at the vets today. We were slightly worried that she may have associated the vets with unpleasant things, but not a bit of it. She bounced through the door into reception, little tail wagging away, and greeted everyone enthusiastically. The receptionist remembered her name, and remarked that you'd never guess that she'd been spayed only two days before. When we took her in to be checked by the vet, all was well. Wound is nice and clean, no signs of infection, and she's not been worrying at it at all. I did burst out laughing when the vet said about letting her take it easy and quietly and told her that the only way to keep Wookie quiet and restful would be to glue her into her basket, which was probably a bit drastic! The vet laughed and agreed that she is a lively one, and that as long as we tried not to let her run and jump if possible for the next couple of weeks, and stopped her from paddling in muddy puddles and rolling in poop ( yes, she does that, the mucky little monster!) she would be fine. I have to admit that I'm much happier that she is as bouncy as she always has been and we have to try to limit her enthusiasm than I would be if she was quiet, and subdued and clearly suffering. These little dogs are truly amazing.....and Boy, do they ever steal your hearts! |

I am so happy to hear the good news. I think most of all had the same guilt feeling. My dog's surgery was after having a total hysterectomy. I also felt bad for my Pixie...but at the same time I knew I was saving her from future pains and diseases like mine... These little dogs are little thieves indeed...mine stole my heart too! | |

| I am very happy to hear all went well and that Wookie is recovering nicely. How sweet of your coworkers to inquire about your little girl. Love the part about Wookie waking you up with her little wet nose to let you know she was feeling good.
