| neutering after starting to mark? help!!! Hey guys im new to this site but i have a 8month old yorkie right now and he's started to mark for about 2 weeks now. first it was just outside but the past week he's marked inside as well just on the dining table legs so far. Everytime I catch him inside i stop him and say no but he still tries and its been more frequent the past few days. I am taking him to get neutered very soon but I'm concerned that his marking won't stop after the neutering so I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with having their puppy neutered after they've already started marking and what happened?? Thanks alot and any help is greatly appreciated!!! |

| Neutering might help, but won't magically change things. Keep working on training before and after the neutering. I've heard from people who were successful in stopping it. You can also use a belly band for back up while training. Just be sure to give him adequate opportunity to potty, and keep him clean.

| i know i will keep training him after neutering but i was wondering how much of a help it is. also, what is a belly band and how does that work?? any tips on helping with potty training? how long did it take all of you in general? i had read up on yorkies prior to getting my puppy and i knew they were stubborn in nature so it might take longer to train but i'm wondering what everyone's experiences are with the length of time training for success. thanks in advance!!!! |

| I have numerous neutered males, and while it is not a definite stop for marking, I have NO neutered males that mark! I got all mine neutered right about 8 months old, after the growth plates have matured, and none of them mark. A couple of them had already started to lift and mark, so they went in immediately for their neuter....worked great, nipped it in the bud! This has been happening for me for at least 20 years, so I do not think it is a fluke! You need to get on this immediately, if it is going to work for you....the longer he has those male hormones circulating, the harder it is to "fix".... If he is already starting to mark, "very soon" neutering had better be in a couple of days! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 03-31-2016 at 03:23 PM. |

| thank you he is going to get neutered tomorrow and he's now 8month and a week. i thought about having him neutered at 6 months but thought he should hit more of his growth spurt first so I'm glad to hear that you had them neutered at the same age. Any tips for successfully potty training? how long did it take you? I've been at it every since i got him at 2 months old but he's still having lots of accidents in the house. He goes outside whenever i let him out but he's still not holding it in when inside the home even though i let him out every hour. He holds it in when he is inside his playpen while i'm at work though. any help would be greatly appreciated it seems like everyone here has lots of experience with training yorkies and he's my baby i'd like to have him on the right path with me for the rest of his life. Thanks in advance all!!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Neutering is def not a magic bullet in terms of marking - it has more to do w/ training than anything else. Belly bands do not help w/ training, they just prevent pee from getting on stuff, that's all.

| We took in a 2 year old rescue last year that was just then neutered and he marked like crazy. He was potty trained but marking is different. I didn't give him any leeway. He was on my lap, attached to my waist with a leash and harness, or in his crate at all times until I thought he was trustworthy, and it took about three months. Several months later we went to open our summer cabin and I realized he was only trained for OUR HOUSE, because he started marking again right away. We went right back to square one, with the leash and harness or in the crate. It didn't take nearly as long, but several weekends before I felt I could trust him there. I didn't like belly bands for training, because even if he was wearing a belly band he still got the same satisfaction or whatever it is he was getting from marking. I still use them occasionally though if I have to take him anywhere he is not familiar with. Like Petco. He loves to wander around there, but he will always slip in a mark no matter how carefully I watch him. So I always keep a belly band and a few pads in my glove box just in case. Diana |

| I agree with Ann and Diana that belly bands do not help with training. Belly bands are a soft material wrapped around the belly and fastened with velcro. They are just insurance when you cannot supervise really closely. I've never used one with my boys, but I know some people whose dogs were deterred from marking while wearing one. Definitely requires added work to make sure the dog doesn't end up spending time with a wet belly, which can cause health issues. Diana's suggestion to tether him to you while training is a great one. When I have my boys at other people's houses or in public places, I keep a close eye on them to make sure they don't do anything. As Diana indicated, new places and new scents can cause a well-trained dog to be tempted to mark. Max has never marked in our house, but when we stayed in a hotel, he sniffed a spot on the wall that was likely marked. He lifted his leg, but looked at me before he did anything. I said "no" and took him outside to do his thing right away.

| I got my Monty when he was 8 months old and he marked EVERYTHING!! All the time. ALL the time! I didn't get him neutered right away because he came with a parasite and that wound up taking 1.5 months to get rid of. Needless to say .... while treating the giardia ... he continued to mark in the apt and anywhere else he happened to be. I did the best I could keeping up with him knowing that the neuter was coming. Knowing as well that neutering doesn't always help. He was neutered on March 22 and ... tadaaa! No marking! What? Smile. I am a lucking dog owner. Yep. He has passed the test in Petsmart (only lifted his leg once and we were in there for over half an hour). He has been in 3 of my friends places. I have set up a "pee station" in my apt and he has only used it once and that was because of an over full bladder and I didn't get him out soon enough. So far so good! I am positive that all the "no pee" and stopping him from marking (probably managed to catch a quarter of them lol) helped his little brain to know not to pee inside. Now that that raging instinct is gone, normal urges have the training behind them to wait to go outside. Best of luck to you and your lil one. My Montys bday is May 28th. What's yours? Calgary eh? Smile. Weather was stunning in Vancouver today. I have sent some your way. |
