| Borderline Sandfly Blood Test I rescued an 8-year old Yorkie a week ago. I've taken her to the vet twice - first as a general check up and today to get pre-anesthetic blood tests before she gets her teeth cleaned; her mouth smells really awful, it's impossible to let her get close to anyone. Anyway, these tests all came out normal. I also decided to get her checked out for sandfly and her test result was borderline sandfly as her previous owner/s kept her outdoors during the day. My vet told me she will have to get tested again in four weeks time and it is possible that the test was false-negative. Has anyone's Yorkie received a borderline sandfly blood test result please? Thanks. |

| This is the first time I've heard of sand fly. It isn't common in North America. I found this on a vet website: "dogs in North America are not known to be infected by sand fly vectors although direct transmission within the foxhound breed does occur." I hope the test on your girl does turn out be a false negative.

| It looks like it must be a test for Canine Leishmaniasis (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_leishmaniasis). It seems much more common in Mediterranean countries, and some breeds are more susceptible than others. Hopefully your next test will be completely negative. (A false negative is a result that later turns out to be positive--not a good thing.) Last edited by pstinard; 02-24-2016 at 10:40 AM. |

| Borderline Sandfly Blood Test Hello, thank you for your replies. Yes, it seems that the disease is more common in the Mediterranean countries where it is warmer. I guess all I can do is hope for the best. If she (I've named her Lucy) does have sandfly then she will be given the best possible treatment. Poor little girl, she spent most of her time outdoors stuck in a tiny area with no protection against sandfly. |
