YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Cancer in Dogs https://www.wearethecure.org/ Canine Cancer affects one out of every three dogs. Of those, over half of them will die of cancer. The National Canine Cancer Foundation is asking for your help to fund important research grants that are working towards improving those statistics. Through a major project funded by the National Institute of Health, the mapping of the genome sequence of the dog has been complete. Knowing the mapping of every gene in the dog, gives researchers an advantage not yet achieved in humans Amazing stats is it not????? Amazing and very sobering. Cancer is a scourge on all but particularly our canine friends and partners. Take a look at this poster: We Are The Cure Blog | Canine Cancer Information Blog Archive How Healthy is your Dog? The dogs shown were no accident - particularly Rottweilers et al with a huge known risk for osteosarcomas. Dalmatians Labs GSDs Corgis etc.

| The stats are so sad….3 out of 5 of my most recent dogs died of cancer, and I have one currently thats going through it. I am always wondering if its all the chemicals they are given in shots, and the things we do to protect them from serious diseases, like heart worm, etc. All the crap that is in treats and some foods. I've gotten pretty paranoid about what I feed them now. I make the treats I give them, I even make homemade dog food 100% organic, which I add to the dry food…but I do also feed canned food 50/50 % during the week. Sunni will be my first puppy that I am questioning every thing that the vet wants to give her…then I do my research and do my best to understand the risk/benefits. Its really all I can do. |

| Terrible statistics. I think there is largely to blame for cheap food. Ecology? I think a lesser extent ... |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | A call to action if there ever was one. And I have posted elsewhere that some human researchers are very interested in studying canine cancer, particularly where that info might just throw light on human cancers. Drllling down through hereditary, environmental, nutrition, medical decisions, and other factors to try to see to find causation is a huge task

YT Addict | I never would have imagined Tink would get cancer... I wonder as well, what the REAL cause is for such a high percentage - and hope and pray that vets will have a better idea of how to prevent it from happening in the future. I WISH it wasn't even a possibility. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yes and I have had 2 die in the last couple o years from cancer. Beyond hereditary/genetic factors (many if not all are not known - merely suspected), it is very tempting to believe that enivornment and food and medical decisions have some role to play. At this point in time as owners our best defense I think is regular vet care, coupled with regular owner evaluations of their own dogs health status, palpating for lumps and other irregularities, a judicious enjoyment of our great outdoors. For example after walks and training all toys are washed, dogs are regularly bathed particularly their paws. Giving regular exercise ad insuring your dog is kept lean n trim. A species appropriate healthy diet. The last is to keep up to date on your breed and the latest that research is telling us about this breed.......

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | New researcn on telemeres Are Telomeres The Key To Aging And Cancer? The above link tells you about telomeres and their role in the human body. There was some new research mentioned on my radio station that I only caught a snippet of - but sounds exciting. Apparently researchers have found a pattern with telomere rapid shortening then a period of quiescence and the telomeres act/look normal again - then 2-3 yrs later a cancer diagnosis is made. This appears to happen across all cancers. Obviously more research is needed - but wow if in our lifetime they could actually tell who is at risk - and how to stop or eliminate that risk - can we really be looking at a cure for cancer?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | One has to wonder about all the over-vaccinating that went on (and still goes on, to at least a somewhat lesser extent) for decades...and what that potentially did to the immune system as it pertains to cancer. Who knows?

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yes one does wonder about this. And also I think canines just like humans have immune systems that can and do respond differently.

| I wonder what the incidence is among yorkies because at least anecdotally, it doesn't seem to be one in 3. I have to take a look at these links, but, I am already wondering if type of cancer is iifentified. Unaltered females have high instances of mammary tumors but that cancer is preventable. Skin cancers like melanoma are easily removed and not generally metastatic in older dogs yet could be slanting the %.
