| Eye Care- Constantly tearing and raw around eyes Hi Everyone, I have a 5 yr. old Yorkie and his eyes keep tearing to the point where his hair around the eyes are so wet that the skin is raw. Is there anything i can do to help with this? The vet said its normal and there might be soem products on the market to help but I dotn want to give him chemicals to stop the tearing. Thanks! |

| I'm not a vet but an optometrist who has a yorkie and what I do for Charlie on a weekly basis is trim the hair around the eyes that can poke the cornea and cause increased lacrimation(tearing). There are small scissors with a blunt end on them that my wife bought. When Charlie gets chunky mucous in the corner of the eye I warm up water in a tea cup and then put a cotton ball in the water. I touch the cotton ball on my skin to check temp, (if it's too hot for me it's too hot for her) then she'll close her eyes and I'll place the cotton ball on the inside corner of the eye and I'll wipe away the mucous. I've also used Dr.'s Foster and Smith eye wipes. They are alcohol based. I prefer the cotton ball with water. |

| I don't feel it's normal. I wonder if it could be allergies.

| Thanks for the information, Everyone. I do have the rounded scissors but its been hard to keep up with the tears. I find it better to have a little bit of hair so the tears can go somewhere rather than directly on the raw skin. i feel bad for the little guy because its raw and open sometimes. Also, i dont think its allergies because its all year round. |

YT Addict | I went through similar situation a few years ago. She had tests, drops, allergy medicine, and nothing really changed. I even went to another vet for a second opinion. However both vets didn't seem to think there was a real issue and kept saying it was " normal". when I changed her diet to Royal canin, I did notice her eye/eyelid skin improved. I'm wondering if a type of vitamin would help? |

Question - is the conjuctiva (the area inside the lids of eyes) red/irritated, or just pink/normal? If somewhat irritated, you have to wonder if it's either allergies or if he has those microscopic hairs pointing into his eyes, which have to be removed by an ophthalmologist. If normal looking, then the other thing constant watering can mean is that the tear ducts are completely clogged/shut...this is what our rescue chi has. He has almost constant tearing and it was found that his ducts are completely clogged so none of his eye moisture can drain out the ducts. The testing for this is very easy, so I'd ask your regular vet about this one if you think it could be this. You put a died eye drop into his eyes, wait about 15 mins, and see if any of it comes out his nose. If it doesn't come out, the ducts are probably closed off. You can then do a 30-day regimen of a steroid based drop to see if the ducts will then open up...after that, you then retest. My chi did this, but his ducts never did open .

| Although some tearing is normal if it is excessive enough to cause raw open wound on your babies skin I would say that is above normal peramiters! We use a face wash regularly and currently we trim the eye area/mustache hair that gets too goopy (we have grown out before and I like that but we aren't grown out right now). Inbetween face washes we use a soft rag with warm water to keep clean. I know you mentioned wanting to keep the hair to allow a wicking agent for moisture an although that makes sense to me, I think you would hve more long term success clipping the hairs and gently cleaning face throughout the day. If you have raw open sores you may see if your vet would reccomend the ophthalmic antibiotic Terramycin to clear up the wounds. You mentioned wanting to use natural methods and although I very much support natural methods if it has 'gone too far' sometimes we need to rely on the modem medicine we are blessed to have to get back to a safe healthy platform ad work from there using natural, holistic and preventative methods to maintain a healthy state. Good luck with your pup, glad he has you on his side looking out for him
