| bowel movement I have an 18mo. old Yorkie who is very picky. He eats dog food when he chooses and other times I have to cook for him. Mainly chicken but he does get ground beef occasionally. I would like to know how often a yorkie is supposed to move his bowels? Sometimes it is every other day. His bowels are not dark and they are formed but not hard. He does not strain and seems to have no problem when he does go. He is active and playful. I have a quality dog food out for him all the time but some time he just refuses to eat it. I have tried several different types and he still only eats when he gets hungry. As I said, when I get really concerned about his appetite, I cook for him. He is 3.3lbs and he seems to be normal. His vet does not seem concerned and told me that as long as I leave food out that he will eat when he gets hungry. He also has constant access to fresh water. I have never owned a tiny dog before and just wanted to know if I should be concerned? I love my little man and don't want to see him become ill. Last edited by smp261; 11-02-2014 at 02:22 AM. |

| As long as you keep kibble out for him,if he is really hungry he will eat. The problem with these lil critters is, they play us lol, they know if they don't eat the dog food, we will give them the good stuff chic or beef lol, I have been there more tomes then I care to remember, my concern always was, I will do what ever to get them to eat. 3.3 lbs is cause for concern to get them to eat, my lastgirl was 17 lbs, if she didn't eat her reg. food, off to the market to buy chic. outlets, and she was not a picky eater. If your vet has no concern, then you are dong a good job. My lil adopted boy will eat what ever I give him, I am truly blessed... He is fed dry kibble and he loves it, he is fed at 7AM and again at 5PM. He is not a walked dog, he has freedom to relieve him self anytime he wants, he goes 3 to to 4 times a day.Sometimes it's just a small amount. I use to walk my dogs when I lived in an apartment they were walked in the morning at 7:30AM before I went to work and again at 4:30PM when I came home, they pooped in the AM and in the PM. If you walk him twice a day he should poo at those times, if he has freedom like my Cody he can poop more then 2 times,BUT, he should have one bowel movement at least once a day. If any of my dogs did not poop for one day, and the next morning no poop, I would have been at my vet, this how ever never happened with 8 dogs I have had.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. A bowel movement only once every other day is not common, but I've read that it is not cause for concern. Especially because you say his stools are normal and he doesn't strain. Good to hear he is active. Does his body appear to be in good shape, not underweight? My only concern would be supplementing his diet with so much chicken, or ground beef, that he is not getting the proper balance of nutrients that dogs require. For instance, dogs need the phosphorus from protein sources balanced by the right amount of calcium (from other sources). Many people here homecook and use a vitamin/mineral supplement called BalanceIt. They use recipes from https://www.petdiets.com/ Relative to the kibble, you may have to encourage him to eat it. I had to play games and hand feed Max his first year. The thing that cured him was bringing home another Yorkie who got into his food bowl. Also, make sure the kibble sitting out gets replaced regularly. Premium kibble goes stale and spoils faster. If the kibble is sitting out all day, it may not be palatable to your little boy.

The main concern is whether this is a properly balanced diet, or at least close to it.
