| Home Cooking for Yorkies with Sensitive Tummies Hi everyone... I am sure this question has come up a billion times but I am just so confused as to what to do and despite reading some threads I am more confused than ever and was wondering if I could get some input. I have two Yorkies. One is 2 years old - the other one is 6 and she is a rescue. (Lou'e and Maggie) Both seem to be having digestive issues on and off. Currently I buy them Canine Caviar food - a holistic type - I change the flavor up every couple bags and now it's lamb and pearl millet... Anyways...Lou'e seems to have colitis here and there...and now my second one, Maggie (the six year old) has had her second bout of HGE in less than 3 months. :/ I am at a loss as to what could cause her HGE as she doesn't get into anything and the vets are clueless as well. Lou'e...well, he can't handle too high fat/protein. So I decided to cook for them. So I made them boiled chopped up chicken, white rice, green beans and pureed boiled sweet potatoes. I also put an OmegaAlpha Probiotic on top. I just started doing this over the weekend...but now hear that they need their kibble to get all their nutrients? That they won't get all their vitamins and minerals through this diet alone. I then also hear that dry food isn't that great, that I should stick with wet. I AM SO TOTALLY LOST IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY!! I just want what is best for them (as we all do)...and I also want to stop cleaning the carpets every other day (lol). Am I going about this the right way? Should I give them predominantly home cooked and then a bit of kibble? Or should I get wet food for them? How much should I be giving them as well? Lou'e is just under 5lbs and Maggie is 9lbs. Any insight, or links I could go to, would be so helpful! I really am interested in giving them the proper nutrition as I am studying to become a holistic nutritionist myself...but the world of dog food is so very confusing!! Thank you!! -Sandra.* (Lou'e & Maggie-Moo) |

| Yes, you can find free recipes at www.BalanceIt.com and can purchase their all in one supplement to ensure the diet is balanced. There is also www.petdiets.com for info and diets for $25 to purchase. As the dogs are having some issues, you might need to do a consult but that's more costly. You could ask questions on Petdiets.com - she is a board certified veterinary nutritionist. She's helped me with home cooking for the last 6 years. I've home cooked for 14.5 years for my dogs. Both sites have a FAQ section for info. Good luck!

To the OP, I know many people suggest rotating dog foods, but this can cause some problems with some dogs. In nature, there really isn't that much variety. It may be safer to find a food and stick with it. With home cooking, new foods should be added very gradually. Probiotics, I'm told do help with that though. Glad you are getting a supplement, home cooked is okay for a few weeks, but if no supplements are added they can become unnourished in just a few months, much faster than humans. It confusing b/c their needs are different than humans, and I've heard that a 5 pound yorkie needs as much calcium as an adult woman, so without some type of supplement they would become lacking. I know how you feel though, it's so confusing.

| 107Barney - thanks so much for the suggestions. I will make sure to check those sites out and read up on the FAQ. Nancy1999 - I don't change the brand of food, just the flavour, which I hear is OK if actually doing that and not changing the entire brand...I could be wrong! But...I hear you should change it up to avoid allergies. I did get them a probiotic but hear that I need to supp with a multivitamin? I don't know this is just so confusing. I definitely don't want them getting undernourished! I just want them have the best diet possible. I will keep researching! |

| Yes Nancy. Dr Remillard is currently using Chef's Complete sold by Petgrocer (Rayne clinical nutrition). Petgrocer has its items on Amazon. ETA: she is using it for healthy pet diets and also in some consults. Some of my dogs are using BalanceIt products.

| Forgot to say that Chefs complete doesn't use ingredients from China. The amount to add to home cooked food depends on the rest of the ingredients in the diet and the formulation for a particular dog. Each of my diets has different amounts.

My boys have been eating the same flavor of the same brand for years. I know the belief is that you should change protein sources to avoid allergies. My boys are 5 and 6 years old and have had chicken based meals every day of their lives. No allergy to chicken here or allergies at all. Same with my previous dogs. They ate the same thing every day of their very long lives. Best wishes in finding the right diet for your little ones.

| I was confused also in the beginning about home cooking but I asked 107barney a lot of questions lol, and I also spoke through email with Dr. Delaney about the BalanceIT product. He responds very quickly! Chloe has been on a home cooked diet with the BalanceIT canine blend for a month now and it's actually quite simple once you get the hang of it. The BalanceIT website also has a lot of resources to learn about home cooking and you can generate a balanced diet with the EZ generator. If your yorkie has a sensitive tummy, I'm sure if you email Dr. Delaney he'll assist you with what you need to know to make a balanced diet for your yorkie. All you'll need is the BalanceIT, a little scale for measuring and Ziploc bags to freeze the portions. It's pretty simple! I haven't used Petdiets yet because BalanceIT by itself is serving me well.

| I have been Home cooking for a couple of months now and I bought diets from petdiets.com. I purchased 5 recipes and they all require the Chef's Complete supplement. My guys are doing great on the home cook food. Good luck in your quest for the correct diet for your baby.

| Thanks everyone for the advice! BabieChloe - does Dr. Delaney answer emails for free? Or is there a fee? I will look into these links and make a decision on what to do. On another note! Since getting Maggie OFF of her kibble and onto this food with her probiotic she has finally had a solid poop! After 2 weeks! Never thought I would get excited over solid poops. Haha! Thank you!! |
