| Nail Care Trimming the Nails, do you do it? I am wondering what others on the forum do regarding their tiny nails. The nails on my bigger dog aren't such a problem because I can see them clearly and I use a grinder and do it myself. However my little one's nails are very small and very hidden behind his fur. I have tried having my wife hold him down while I bring the grinder over but I'm afraid that the grinder may pull on his paw fur so I always end up backing out. I tried to get the guillotine style scissor but he just won't stay still either. Has anyone else had any luck doing this themselves, or do you usually just bring your dog into the groomers and have them do it all.

| I use a dremel on my two babies. I find it easiest to do right after a bath, and while they are wet. Its so much easier to see the nail and hold the wet hair out of the way. Good luck My Jada is a fighter so I wrap her in a towel like a burrito. My friend Lisa (Sugarmamma) just recently purchased a preemie infant swaddle cloth to contain her little fighter Curri Bee..she said it works wonderfully.

| I use regular dog nail clippers (non guillotine). They wiggle, but as long as the paw I am doing is still it ij ok. The worst that will happen is you will go too far. No biggie.

| I always clip the fur the night before a nail clip. Others here have used pop socks/stockings, to put over the paw, pushing the nails through, that way the fur doesn't get caught. We are going to try this too. We clip then dremel. How do you hold the dog? What we do might not work for you, everyone and dog is different. I hold the dogs firmly against me, dog on the table, me standing. Dog is facing under the arm and we fold the leg back. Bit like a horse is done. It seems easier to hold them, with less of a pull. Plus they don't see what's happening.

| It is hard to do, but very important, so if you can't do it have a groomer or vet do it. Here is a thread from the Yorkie Talk Library that might give you some hints: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gro...ons-video.html

| I do all grooming except for nails and feet. I am happy to let a groomer take care of that for me. It isn't worth the fight. Much easier to pay anywhere from $5 at Petsense to $13 at the vet or other groomer to get the feet and nails trimmed. (vet only does nails., does not trim feet)

| There was a recent yelp article for the local groomer here were they were strangling an uncooperative dog. I'm going to try the wet fur with a wrap facing away from me with help from my wife first if that doesn't work. Gonna take to his vet. Thanks for tons of tips

YT 500 Club Member | I tried twice and it was not worth it so my groomer is right up the street so I just go there about once a month. He is even bad for her too but she won't give up and lets him struggle for a little bit and keeps trying. |

| Yeah, my little guy starts shivering, does barrel rolls and tries to run off, if it's bad I will end up caving in. My big one as much as he hates getting his nails groomed, he will actually stay still if he's fed treats for me to grind his nails with the dremel like tool we bought. Funny he gave us much trouble before too, but we found a way, he no longer needs to go to the groomers and be held down by 2 people just to get his nails cut.

Now, they're used to it a little, they still fight me & act like I'm going to kill them, but won't wiggle as much...hoping one day that they'll trust me enough where it doesn't end up w/me sweating bullets & them panting like we just walked away from boxing match or something!

How clever! I love that idea of the preemie swaddle. Do you know which type of preemie swaddle she bought? There are so very many kinds online that I'm at sea. I use a towel with Tibbe if I have let his go over a week and have to grind a little longer and he gets restless but I would love something with velcro!!! He senses my dread of doing it and feeds off my worry that I'm going to hurt his tiny toes or pads with the grinder as his feet are so small, I have to take the protective cap off and just use the grinder directly - so I'm fairly tense, even when I deep breathe and pre-relax. The worry I could hurt him if he moves wrong is somehow still there so the towel seems to soothe him but it comes loose at times! I've used this grinder method for 4 or more years now I think it is and he's not been hurt yet but I know anything is possible and must tense up and he'll begin to squirm before I'm done.

| I use the dremel and love it. You do have to be careful that it doesn't grab & pull the hair though. I'm going to try it after bath time to see if it's easier for me with the hair wet. Thanks for the tip!

| Michelle is right, I bought a Summer Preemie Velcro swaddle and LOVE it but I use it for brushing curri's teeth not to dremel! Curri is really good with the dremel but likes to kick at my arms to cause the sonicare to exit her little mouth. Stinker With the dremel, as long as the hair is wet I can expose their tiny toes and dremel safely. She doesn't fight me too badly on that one. Sugar just lets me do whatever I want to her..... She's given up on her wackadoodle mamma

| Here is the link Amazon It could be used to dremel if the bottom was cut out. May have to play around with that one. I bought 2.
