| Jackson is 17lbs, 5 1/2 yrs old, active & fairly lean, but solid. He eats 1/2 cup per day of kibble (usually fed foods in the 430 kcal/cup range) and spoonful of wet food in each meal. He also gets treats and such occasionally or a dentastix at night, something like that, so I try to account for those calories as well.

| I agree with the posts above, depends on his size, age activity level, and which food you feed. Some foods are 'denser' than others, have more calories per cup than others. Look at the feeding guidelines on the back of the bag and feed a little less than recommended. Most foods overestimate how much is needed.

YT Addict | How old is your dog? Pups eat more than adult dogs. My adult dog eats 1/2 cup total (trying to lose weight). He is 14 lbs. My puppy eats 1/4 cup total plus one tablespoon wet mixed in he is 11 weeks and 2 lbs. You can look up calorie counters for canines and you enter the calories per measured amount and the dogs weight and it will calculate based on the activity level and age of the dog ho much they should eat. |

| I think there are a lot of factors…my old guy had a good appetite to the end (if he liked the food!) He'd been put on the canned I/D after a pretty serious pancreatic bout and once his belly settled down he seemed always ravenous within a couple hours after eating. I called my vet and we added the I/D kibble and I finally worked out a ratio that seemed to keep him satisfied. His weight pretty much stayed consistent until near the end. He also enjoyed frozen snacks! Blueberries, frozen cut green beans (probably his favorite) and raspberries. He also liked fruits and veggies in general. I think nutrients are such a huge part of overall health for all of us. The better we eat the better we feel and live. I'd monitor his weight and go from there. If his weight is consistent and he's eating healthy food and treats you should be good And a word to the wise. His bad bout of Pancreatitis (really bad) came after a big family cookout. Lots and lots of people and even though they were told not to feed him I am sure everyone thought to themselves oh he could have this one little bite of potato chip, or here Lou have this last bit of my hamburger or hotdog…repeat this scenario with just 1/4 of the people attending and your 7 lb dog gets well sick as a dog…I learned to sequester him in my bedroom during future parties. And did I occasionally feed my guy people food yes I did but very very limited. My big dog people friends forget that your Yorkie is a tenth or less of their dogs size but they break off or hand a little dog what they would hand their 80 lb. Golden Retriever. |

| Feed to condition (a good body score (your vet can help with this)). Our 17 pound pup gets 1/2 -1 cup daily. He sometimes does not eat though. Our 6 pound pup eats probably about 2/3 - 1 cup a day of a calorically non-dense food. Burns it right off. Depends on the dog.

| Mitzi- 11 lb rescue, I feed 1/4 c 2x a day- She is 8-9 yrs so not too active, but looks great since we cut back on the amount of (junkie) food they were giving her- she is also hungry for her meals and has a nice solid, regular poop. My two are 6 1/2 lbs and I give them a large tablespoon 2x a day, and 7-10 kibble at night before bed.(total aprox1/4 cup a day) Abby sometimes gets a more generous helping as she is more active. |

| I've originally schedule fed for a short time (at about 3/4ths or less a cup throughout the day), but then allowed free-feeding when I discovered my girl had gotten the shakes at least once or twice. As mentioned, this is very dependent on the individual dog. So I plan to keep her free-fed unless the vet tells me otherwise (or mentions she needs to lose weight) ^^;
