| I would also suggest a consult with a homeopathic vet. Mine is great and he does phone consults. His webaite is www.thepetwhisperer.com. I feel that your current vet has over vaccinated your puppy but that is only my opinion and you have nothing to feel guilty about because you should be able to trust your vet. Just start niw and educate yourself. You are doing that here and there is lots of info on the internet. Just do a search here or on google and type in dog over vaccination. |

| Wow, how ironic I took my 16 week old Chester to the vet yesterday to have his third set of shots and the vet told me the exact same thing, that I shouldn't trust my breeder to have done his previous vaccinations correctly and that we should start over from scratch and treat the shots he just got as his first ones. I questioned her opinion, but went ahead and set the appointments up. Now that I'm reading this, I am definately starting to second guess my vet. I fully trust that Chester's breeder gave him his shots. She kept a record (which she sent home with me) noting the dates in which she administered them and also noting that she didn't start them until the pup was 8 weeks. I'm glad I read this post, because I was concerned about the possibility of him having a total of 5 vaccination sets. It seemed a little odd to me. Looks like I'll be switching vets...

Thank you for the reply and website. I am going to contact the breeder. I do feel disappointed that I put my trust in someone who may have had his financial interests as the highest priority... this still surprises me in people I will continue trying to educate myself as my voice is the only one that can speak up and protect my girl (really have to work on my assertiveness). Would you say that if I decide to stop the vaccinations without the last two in the series(except for rabies) that it would help in any way or limit the effects if she has been overvaccinated? And other than that she's had enough vaccinations to start going out and about? Thanks again for any help

I just cannot understand why the damn vets do this the these wee little puppies. That was my reason for posting my rant...I'm so happy you are armed with the correct information now. hey check out my statements (claims). Check me out...Go to the vet medical school web sites and look up immune shots. I believe Dr. Dodson has some info on her website also. And then get on the phone and call other vets in your area. I would also suggest you telephone your breeder for her feelings on this matter. Do anything but just do not over vaccinate this puppy. Please please do start looking for a new vet. DO NOT EVER START OVER WITH IMMUNE SHOTS! There is no need. Your puppy only needs the current shots proper for his age. Please check with another vet!

My gut feeling is this puppy probably needs one more set of shots at 16 weeks and then no more immune shots for one year except for rabies. IMHO As for over vaccinated. We are not sure and there is really no way to tell unless the animal becomes ill. I will say it is NOT common but only that it does happen. We do not have enough research data to confirm the "over-vaccination" theory. At this time is is antidotal only. Means on a case by case basis. So until you see a problem please do not worry. Okay? Can you check with your breeder and/or another vet for advice?

| Isn't this such a scary world for us and our little babies?!?! mg: I am very picky to the point that I am actually a very anal person when it comes to my little baby! I knew that my breeder was the one for us because we had to send in so much information before she would even consider us to "adopt" one of her babies....this was something that I loved about her....and this was something that we did on her too. We checked into everything!!! She was awesome about paperwork that she had given us...I got copies of just about everything she had did with that litter of puppies and my little guy! She didn't seemed bothered by this at all. Her shot record was exact and like many of you, she used the labels too. She even had a letter included and I want to see it was some sort of legal binding letter stating that she had given all the shots and all the records were correct! - although, you never know with people and the more horror stories you hear, the more you wonder if people are totally being honest! But I do fell 100% okay with my purchase. Now, years (I mean years) ago....I bought a little Shih-tzu from an elderly lady that kept breeding even though she wasn't fully able to take car of all of her babies (so sad)....she had just hand written bits and pieces of information on the little guy that I "rescued". The vet I went to then, knew this lady and wanted to redo all the shots....we did. The sad part of this story is that this little guy didn't live but for two years....He had so many problems and I don't know if it was maybe the lack of shots first or the possible double dosage of them all or what..... I would ALWAYS ask for copies of everything and even if the vet thinks you should get them again....talk to the breeder....if they are a good breeder, they want to make sure that their little ones are okay too! Our breeder is still in contact with us....she is like a grandma...she wants updates and pictures, etc.......wow....the power of Yorkie love!

| very nicely said Jenn, most of us breeders want to help no matter night or day. Contact with the families on a regular basis is vital to me, there is nothing more exciting as when I receive new pics or get an email of a quirky little story about the kid it warms our hearts...Remember the bond is forever and what brought us together is YORKIE LOVE!

| I really wish I saw my own breeder in that way. I asked most of the questions when we first went to see raisin, but I also volunteered a lot of information about the research I'd done (which Still wasn't enough ) and what kind of home environment she would have with us. After we'd had her a couple of weeks, I called her when I had a few questions and it seemed that she would rather I not have called at all, saying that the other person that had gotten a puppie from her hadn't called at all with any questions or problems, almost seemed that she preferred it that way. The last time I called I offered to send pictures or updates she declined. After reading on here about the relationships between a lot of the breeders and the families this is not what I anticipated. She does seem like a nice woman who knows a lot about the breed, but I guess I thought she'd just have more of an attachment to her and want to know about her. |
