| Prey Model Raw puppy what to start with I'm thinking of Prey Model Raw diet for our puppy but she's 2lbs at 9 weeks and I'm not sure what to start her with. Most of the info I can find is written for bigger dogs and I'm unfamiliar with what a dog this size should eat with bone in it. In my mind chicken thigh or chicken wings are just small enough and have a smaller bone, but on few websites I found written that these are the most problematic bones mentioned. Am I right to assume that they are problematic for bigger dogs which might swallow them whole but a yorkie will actually chew it ? Could use some guide from anyone willing to help. |

| I have heard that puppies systems are not ready for raw and that it can make them sick.

| I would start with a pre-made raw that has the bones ground up. When I started Piper on raw she was only about 2 1/2 pounds. I started her on Nature's Variety raw bites and have since moved to Darwin's. She's just a little girl so I probably always keep her on a pre-made.

| I've been feeding my Rambo on raw diet since he was 2 months old. Started with a chicken leg, and moved onto chicken breast. I feed him some gizzard and liver once in a while. Bones are fine, they will chew on it for a long time. People buy chew toys for their dogs... this is their natural chew toy. As mimi said - check out the raw feeding group - theres alot of myths regarding raw feeding that you will find out. - just google Raw feeding myths. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You've received some great suggestions and just wanted to also mention the option of starting w/ premade raw if you're too worried about bones. As to a puppy's 'system' not being ready for raw, that's just not accurate. A puppy's system, just like a wolf puppy, has the ability to handle raw, cooked, kibble, or canned. That said, all individual puppies can have certain intolerances...but those intolerances could easily include kibble or a carrot or whatever random thing...not just 'raw'. Keep us posted and good luck!

| I give Luca and Diesel raw chicken necks as the bones are much softer. To ensure they don't gulp down the chicken neck, I hold it. Also, the chicken necks I use are from small chickens, like a Cornish hen size. They absolutely love them and they are very good for their teeth and neck muscles. Both Luca and Diesel are 10 lbs. |

| what did your breeder have the dog on. My recommendation is to buy whole organic chicken. You don't want too much bone in the diet to begin with and chicken bones are very soft. I would wean the pup off kibble with some boiled chicken, then every day let it chew on some raw chicken 6-10% of adult body weight. After about 10 days you can start to add other proteins one at a time, pork, lamb, rabbit, duck, beef. You also want to introduce them to organs after a few weeks, these are vital to the diet. Some dogs will not eat them right away, many people freeze the organs first and for some reason the dogs then eat them should be 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 10% organ (5% of which is liver) I also feed mine green tripe. I get my organ and tripe in ground frozen cubes and then am able to measure them out as a weight percentage. I freeze them in portions and give them as a treat after a meaty meal. |

| Heart is considered a muscle meat but it is quite rich so I wouldn't serve the entire meal of heart I'd mix with regular meat. I see you are in Toronto, you need to join a group of FB called heronview raw and natural. Lori is a breeder and purveyor of raw natural animal foods. She has an incredible knowledge of holistic remedies as well as a massive amount of info for new raw feeders. https://www.facebook.com/groups/59979896589/ She is located in very North Whitby, but it's really really worth a phone call and a meeting with her. With puppies and in my case a gobbler, you want to present a larger mass of meat to them and stay away from necks and wings as they can present a choking hazard unless you are holding it. If you give them an interesting shaped piece like a thigh or bone in breast they will teach themselves how to eat it and it gets their little brains working too, hmmm how can I get at this delicious piece of meat. | |
