| Satin Balls for putting weight on young yorkie. Hello everyone, I am searching for advise on help to gain weight. My son adopted a yorkie puppy (1 yr.) when she was 3 months old. I'm taking care of her for a few months because of a new job he's taken in another state. She was very fragile and under weight from the start. Tall and lanky, very thin hair. She's probably 11-12" tall and weighs 2.5-3 lbs. Her legs are no bigger then my little finger? While just running across the room....she broke her front leg. After surgery she had weekly vet visits and X-rays. $6000.00 later....she broke it again within 2 weeks in the same place.....the choice to either put her to sleep or amputate her leg. She's so active, and I worry about her breaking the other one. Any ideas how to put weight on her and build bone density or muscle mass? He's been free feeding her ( which I don't do) Royal Canin and boiled chicken breast as well as giving Nutri-cal. I found a website about "Satin Balls" for gaining weight and would like any input on this recipe. Thanks for listening... |

| Poor baby girl! When you say 11 -12" tall, is that to her topline or head? Either way, 3 pounds would be severely underweight. What does her vet say about this? Has she had blood work done relative to this? Nutrical should not be used as a supplement. Use it only if she is suffering a hypoglycemic attack and then follow up with a protein. If regular food doesn't follow, her blood sugar will drop again. What are her eating habits? Does she resist eating? Very thin legs are normal for a Yorkie (my boys have them), but bones should not break from normal activity. I would start with your vet on this issue.

| Thank you for responding... .She's about 12" to the shoulder blades. I think she has a good appetite....just grazes throughout the day. Does love treats. The vet specializes in small breeds but only said to try and put some weight on her. I don't know about blood work. I think I will take her to my vet and see what he has to say. |

| Bumping this! Sounds like this baby is taller than my boy and he's closer to 10 lbs than he is to 3. I hope you find a solution soon!

| Puppy food has more calories and might help. What are you feeding her?

Definitely start with the vet and appropriate bloodwork. You could also consult a board certified pet nutritionist who could formulate a special diet for gaining weight in a healthy way. PetDiets - VNC putting your pet's health first .. for more than 20 yrs! My boys are both 11.5 inches to the topline and weigh about 9 pounds. When you go to the vet, they should weigh her. Bone density does increase into the second year, if I recall correctly. My Teddy was very thin until he reached almost 2 years of age, but not underweight. If ribs are visibly sticking out, that is a problem.

| My boy is about 11" and weighs 4lbs. He expect him to fill out still. After the blood work s done to rule out health issues. I would leave puppy kibble out all day so they can eat when hungry. I also give a breakfast and dinner with boiled chicken mixed with his kibble to give him a bit more |

| She should have labs done. The vet needs to take more of an active interest in putting weight on her. There are many recipes for satin balls. Most of them are way too high in fat for yorkies. I would NOT feed them..ever.
