She was very fragile and under weight from the start. Tall and lanky, very thin hair. She's probably 11-12" tall and weighs 2.5-3 lbs. Her legs are no bigger then my little finger?
While just running across the room....she broke her front leg. After surgery she had weekly vet visits and X-rays. $6000.00 later....she broke it again within 2 weeks in the same place.....the choice to either put her to sleep or amputate her leg.
She's so active, and I worry about her breaking the other one. Any ideas how to put weight on her and build bone density or muscle mass? He's been free feeding her ( which I don't do) Royal Canin and boiled chicken breast as well as giving Nutri-cal.
I found a website about "Satin Balls" for gaining weight and would like any input on this recipe.
Thanks for listening... |
Satin Balls is often used by breeders to put weight on their male dogs who lose their appetites when they are around females in heat. It's a temporary measure and isn't a complete or balanced food. One problem with supplementing their diets, is that most human foods don't have enough calcium and a 5 pound Yorkie needs as much calcium as an adult woman. So when you give chicken and Nutrical, which is mainly corn syrup or sugar, you dog isn't eating enough of the balanced food that has plenty of calcium in it. Remember, it's calcium that builds strong bones and teeth, so if I were you, I'd quite with the Nutrical, it should only be used for hypoglycemia, and go easy on the chicken. A protein that is high in calcium is sardines, they have the bone in and you can find the unsalted kind at Traders Joes. Maybe something like that would help? I'd ask the vet.
