| My vet is very conservative with medication and vaccines, but the area on the east end of Long Island where his practice is is heavily infected with Lyme. He recommended that Katie should NOT have the vaccine since it is so easily treated and not worth the risks of vaccinating her.

| Yep, there are some high risk areas, but infection and disease are different.

| I have never vaccinated for Lyme and live in a heavy lyme area where 90% of dogs test positive for it. My dogs have never thrown a positive. I know two dogs who were vaccinated and they got the disease anyway. I will never vaccinate for lyme I think it is a waste of money and an unnecessary provocation of their immune systems for no real benefit. Lyme disease is painful, and if a dog is limping or joints ache, the first thing always run here is a lyme test. Treatment is easy with a course of doxycycline.

| I don't see how a course of antibiotics is hard on them.

| From what I know from JacquelineBabco's dogs who have gotten tick borne diseases (even though her dogs get the Lyme vaccine twice each year), after just one pill of doxycline, and her dogs felt better. It is amazingly effective. I remember so clearly when two of her dogs got anaplasmosis, and I was amazed at how much better they felt after one dose. Jackie is very in tune with her dogs and changes in them, and knows what to look for. She takes every precaution to prevent fleas and ticks, but she is in an area that there are a lot of ticks. The medications repel them, but not always. If their behavior is at all different, she has them tested at the vet, and that's how she catches it early. If left a long time, lyme disease is very painful, but they didn't have any ill effects from the doxcycline.

| Ok, just to be clear, if the dog gets bit by a tick, that doesn't necessarily mean Lyme disease? I haven't even seen a tick, but I know of people here in CA that have had a tick on their dog. I haven't been giving anything for ticks/Lyme. I remember when Jackson got Lyme. We all thought it was LP! Boy were we wrong.

| Only deer ticks carry Lyme, and they are very tiny. A tick needs to be on the body for at least a day for it to transmit infection. I read that even in heavily affected areas, only about one in five deer ticks are infected, but that information was reported four years ago. There are other tick borne diseases, too.

| My mom says it can weaken there immune system. Is that just if they have to take them a lot?

| I think if not vaccinating is goung to keep you up at night worrying, then maybe you shoud vaccinate. If I lived in anendemc area my decision would ge gased on actualrisk f death and on the recommendations of the closest veterinary school. Only 5% of dogs that have been exposed to Lyme get sick. Almost all recover with a round of antibiotics (no, a round of antibitics is not particularlyhard on them). A few get an immune edited renal disease. This has more to do with labs and retrievers. And besides, there is concern that the vaccine itself can cause this. There is question about whether the vaccine does any good if the dog had been exposed previously. Lyme vaccines for humans are not common because of concerns over serious side effect concerns. The standard of care is tick prevention including thoroughly checking the dog's body daily.
