Only 5% of dogs that have been exposed to Lyme get sick. Almost all recover with a round of antibiotics (no, a round of antibitics is not particularlyhard on them). A few get an immune edited renal disease. This has more to do with labs and retrievers. And besides, there is concern that the vaccine itself can cause this.
There is question about whether the vaccine does any good if the dog had been exposed previously. Lyme vaccines for humans are not common because of concerns over serious side effect concerns.

And actually it has been shown that the Lyme vaccine in humans makes their subsequent symptoms worse when they get lyme (because well the vaccine seems useless). Here's a good article from a vet at Angell
