Making Treats

Been busy making treats for my little guy and thought I'd share. Sorry I tried to attach the pics directly but they were too big and I can't resize on my iPad.

Mmmmmmmmm, they look so good! I wanted to make treats for Princess Sophie but haven't gotten around to it yet. We do mostly chicken and pineapple. She and our mini Schnauzer love it!! I will have to get my recipes out and try one. I love, love, love the bone cookie cutter you used. So cute!!

Thanks. I will post the recipe in case anyone wants to try it. I got the cookie cutter at Petsmart. You get 3 different sized ones for $10 made by Martha Stewart.

I kind of made up my own recipe.

Basic Dog Biscuits

Ingredients

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour (substitute regular flour or oats if your dog is sensitive to wheat)
1 cup Oats
1 tsp. salt (or less)
1 egg
1 tsp. Beef or chicken Bouillon granules (can substitute beef or chicken broth/stock)
½ cup hot water
3tbsp Peanut Butter

Optional Add ins
• Dehydrated Liver Pieces or dehydrated Chicken Pieces


Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Dissolve bouillon in hot water
3. Add remaining ingredients
4. Knead dough until it forms a ball (approximately 3 minutes)
5. Roll dough until ½ inch thick
6. Cut into slices or bone shapes (you can purchase a bone shaped cookie cutter to make shapes with)
7. Place dough pieces on lightly greased cookie sheet
8. Cook for 20 minutes

I'd be careful with this bouillon has a lot of salt in it, although you can buy unsalted bouillon, and I don't think you should add any salt to the recipe. Peanut butter has salt, so you are adding it in three different ways. Dogs don't do well with salt, that's why most human food is so bad for them. Other than the salt, it sounds like a great recipe and I love the bone shapes. If you put the whole egg in a food processor small grinder, you get the calcium benefits of the shell.

The peanutbutter is the natural, the broth is sodium free and the salt I just added a pinch. The amounts in the recipe actually came from Ceasar Milan so I trust it. I just changed it up a tad by adding dehydrated liver and peanut butter. Can't wait for him to try them.

I personally wouldn't add the salt, it's just not needed, and even natural peanut butter has salt, so I don't see why you have to add more. Although I like Cesar, he's not a nutritionist, I'm just saying that most people aren't aware salt can be deadly to dogs. There will be many who try this recipe and I just want them to be educated on the dangers of salt.

Common signs to watch for:
•Vomiting
•Diarrhea
•Inappetance
•Lethargy
•Walking drunk
•Abnormal fluid accumulation within the body

•Death


Salt, while commonly used for cooking in the kitchen, is quite poisonous to dogs and cats. The use of salt to induce vomiting in dogs and cats is no longer the standard of care and is not recommended for use by pet owners or veterinarians! Other sources of salt can be found throughout the household: in homemade play dough, rock salt (for de-icers), paint balls, table salt, sea water, enemas (containing sodium phosphate), etc.

Salt poisoning in dogs and cats results in clinical signs of vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, lethargy, walking drunk, abnormal fluid accumulation within the body, excessive thirst or urination, potential injury to the kidneys, tremors, seizures, coma, and even death when untreated. Treatment for salt poisoning includes careful administration of IV fluids, electrolyte monitoring, treatment for dehydration and brain swelling, and supportive care.

I didn't know that about egg shells. Thanks for the tip. I guess I should have made it clear in my recipe that I changed the broth and peanutbutter to a certain one sodium free and that I only did a pinch of salt. My bad!!

Sorry to be so picky, you could probably use regular peanut butter and be okay, just as long as you added no more, but this would work well too. I want to get some of the bones shapes, it really makes a great looking cookie.

No, no my mistake for not changing those parts of the recipe I should have done that to make it more clear. I won't use anything but the sodium free natural peanut butter myself, just because he does like the odd treat of it frozen in his kong toy. Ya I love the cookie cutter, so much fun. Amazon has some fun shape ones too besides bones. I saw on there a 6 pack for $5.

I have a couple of grand dogs who would love this recipe too, it great because I know they would love it and it healthy too, plus it looks so cute. I need to do some baking!

I love baking and now that I have a puppy it make it that much more fun to bake. I don't buy any of his treats I like to know exactly what I am putting into his body.

Now my cat on the other hand has always had a weakness for Soda Crackers and gets one once in a blue moon but she loves them so much. . She's loved them since she was a kitten.

I know what you mean, so many of the treats you can buy have additives and unnecessary colorings, I just don't think they are a smart choice. Yorkies don’t need many calories; every calorie they get should be fairly nutritious.
