| ![]() My two little yorkies are having some kidney issues and was wondering if others have gone thru it. I need some support. My oldest , 3.5 lbs, 15 yrs old just had her teeth cleaned and all went well, but she needs to be monitored with lab work every 3 months and a special diet. Her younger sister , 3 lbs, 13 yrs old was going to get her teeth cleaned this morning but her BUN and CREA readings were too high so they are keeping her over nite to see if the morning lab readings change. If not I don't know what to do. If she don't get her teeth cleaned it could cause her more health problems. I'm going to visit her in the hosp. later. Has anyone had any experience here with early kidney disease, I'd appreciate any input I can get on the subject. They are starting on new special formulated food for Kidney disease consisting of Sweet Potato, Butternut Squash, Cod fish, and Cod fish broth with minerals/vitamins. So far they have liked this food transition. Let me know your experiences with early kidney disease. BTW, both are blind but doing good with it and have no other health issues.

| ![]() Yes my dog was diagnosed with early kidney disease. She already was on an appropriate diet that only needed a minor change. She was placed on two medications aspirin and benazypril. She had a dental last year and just had one two weeks ago. I did go to a speciality dental vet clinic here but I can tell you that she had a standard anesthetic protocol with fluids run during the procedure to support her. My dog is 12 and they routinely treat dogs for dentals who are much more fragile than my dog and much older. I think if I were you I would clean the teeth, however, if I had access to a specialty veterinary dentist that is where I would go with a high risk dog because that is all they do all day long. If you don't have that option, but your vet feels the procedure would be safe, I would still do it.

| ![]() Thanks for the response, She is in an excellent Vet Hosp. that takes the 'high risk' cases. This morning her kidney values were too high so the dr. decided to wait until tests could be run tomorrow morning and take it from there. I got to visit Lindsey this afternoon, she had fluid IV attached, and yes, the dr. did mention to have the IV running during a dental. She said Lindsey is at stage 2 kidney disease out of 5 scale highest, being 13 yrs old. Her sister Lacey is at stage 1 and she's 15 yrs old and about a half pound heavier. They are starting a special diet so hope that helps. I just wish someone found it sooner than it was discovered. Lindsey was 3 lbs this morning. Please think of her with Prayers and hope theres some changes for the better tomorrow. Thank you.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() I don't have experience with kidney disease, except with my cat that passed from it (btw, she lived years w/ kidney disease ![]() But, I just wanted to pass along some good thoughts for you and your senior citizen yorkies - they sound so sweet. I hope they are both feeling better soon.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() Sorry to hear about both of your babies. I lost Nikki to it this summer. He was a rescue so it was estimated that he was close to 19 years old. He lived over a year with the end stages of kidney failure. He was on Hill's KD canned food as he had no teeth and did well on it. I know the specialists can do a lot for kidney disease. I hope Lindsey can come home soon.

| ![]() Lindsey seems to be doing ok, she's home after 36 hrs on IV at the hosp. Her teeth are white, we saw them ![]() I'm so sorry to those that have lost pets to kidney disease, and I thank you for thinking of them and responding. I've been exhausted lately and have been keeping a journal for the dr. and myself so I can remember what they ate, when and other things. I don't know how long they will be with us, but we're doing all we can for them and hold them close with lots of love & attention. They certainly are verbal when they want something to eat, something that they didn't do before, and they eat more often, would like them to gain some weight, but that's probably not possible with KD. God bless you all and hug your furbabies for us.

| ![]() So sorry to hear about your pups. Curious to know if chicken jerky treats were ever a part of their diets?

| ![]() Thank you Yorkie24U for mentioning Rayne Nutrition in your post. I had asked a question about diets for kidney problems in another thread. I didn't want to use Hill's k/d canned for my 3 yr. old yorkie. I will check out Rayne Nutrition. Thanks again! Angelfire |
