| Am I expecting too much? Hi! I have a 10 week old little girl thats been through a really rough patch. Shortly after we adopted her (at 8 wks. old) she fell ill with coccidia. She spent 5 days in the hospital and it is a miracle that she has survived. She is doing better now, and her labwork is coming back normal except still a small amount of coccidia in her stool. The vet is continuing the Albon for another week and thinks that will take care of it. My problem is she will not eat very easily. She appears to be interested in food, but she smells the food and turns her nose up at it. She will eat boiled chicken, but only about 1 to 2 tsp. about once or twice a day. She will eat Nutri-cal fine between times. Willow is only 0.75 pounds and she has a long way to go. Are ther any suggestions on how to get some meat on her bones? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| Oh, bless her heart! Our baby of 6.5 wo had Coccidia when we got her (alongwith tape worm [even though I mistakenly said hookworm in my previous post. See"New Baby and My Tale/Tail of Woe". Fortunately, she was able torecover quickly. We also used the Nutri-Cal and put a little bit of honey inher water (even though she doesn't drink much). We stir it a little to let her know it's there (since it isn't that easy to see). Our little girl likes the Cesar Puppy with Chicken and Beef and we mash itup with a fork to make it as easy to eat as possible. (Sometimes my husbandwill hand feed her a little to whet her appetite.) She doesn't like her fooddish and I've ordered her one that has a dipped side. You might consider areally shallow dish so it's less intimidating. We also leave a little Royal Canin dry for Yorkshire Puppies near her crateso she can eat when she wants. It's probably fostering bad habits, but itseemed more important to make sure she is getting good nutrition to recover. Iteven serves as a good training snacks as it's very small and evidently quitetasty (although I don't know that first hand ). My darling Leesi is doing very well now and for the last few weeks she has been gaining 3 to 3.5 oz. per week. That may not sound like much, but considering she only weight 6 oz. when I got her, it's a huge percentage! May I ask where you got your baby? She's a little younger than Leesi (who is 11.5 weeks now) or I'd think theycame from the same litter! The folks here have been incredibly helpful and are far more knowledgable than I, soI'm sure you will get solid recommendations from the veterans soon. I justwanted you to know you are not alone. |

| Thank you for the replies. She was on the A/D when she came home and wouldn't eat it. I would think it is a "failure to thrive" situation, but she acts so eager to eat until she gets her nose up to it. I am aware that she still is not a well puppy but the vet says it's still worth trying to get her through all of this. |

| I hate this option but try a variery of meat baby foods. Be sure there is no onion! Onion is toxic to dogs! I prefer Earths Best brand it is organic cheap but is also lower in sugar and sodium than most baby foods these days. Also try a bit of yogurt (greek) careful its rare but dogs can be lactose intolerant. Wet food is often more apetizing than kibble with her eeight jist getting her to eat is the priority right now. She's so young and so tiny. Please keep us updated.

| I agree with others that what she is willing to eat is what she should get. She is so young and tiny! Rice cooked in chicken broth, egg (not much because it could upset her tummy),mine like peanutbutter on toast when they dont feel good. Cooked potatoe and carrots no salt,no butter, mashed with a fork. Some here use chicken baby food, you must make sure that it doesnt have any onion powder in it. I do hope that your little one begins to feel better. |

| Poor baby girl! Even with pups who don't face health challenges, sometimes they need encouragement to eat. I had to hand feed Max his first year. We played games and his food was the reward. Maybe try hand feeding and praise her for each bite she takes? Best wishes to your little one.

| When I first got Buster he also was sick with coccidia and giardia and it was a struggle to get him to eat. He loved the Merrick's puppy plate. I would feed him a little bit at a time off my finger. Also maybe try a little scrambled egg (no butter) as it is an easily digested protein. Best wishes with your sweet baby. Merrick Pet Care, Inc. | Puppy Plate I added probiotics to help with his digestion since he was taking so many antibiotics. I used http://www.jarrow.com/product/145/Pet_Dophilus

| Try baby food, chicken....most of them will lick that off your fingers. At this stage of the game, you need to feed her ANYTHING she will eat.....after she starts licking the chicken baby food from your fingers, you can then take some and put it on top of the canned A/D...or you can get a can of Royal Canin puppy mouse....they love that....it may be necessary for you to be syringing that food into her until she eats on her own.... | I will feed her boiled chicken or even boiled ground beef. Sometimes when my Yorkie does not have an appetite, I will hand feed him, whatever it takes to get them to eat. It is important for them to get some food down to help hte healing.

| Our sweet Charlie was on the A/D (canned) for a brief period of time. The vet's office recommended wetting it just a tiny bit and warming it for a few seconds in the microwave. When we did this, Charlie would eat it. Just a suggestion... hope it helps.
