How often do I feed my 13 week old Yorkie Puppy Hello All, so I got my yorkie puppy 2 weeks ago, she is 13 weeks old now and weighs 2.7lb. Her breeder was feeding her Pedigree Chums puppy food but I have gently weaned her off Pedigree to Orijen puppy food which is a higher quality dry food. My question is..how often should I feed her? I started off feeding her breakfast at 6am, lunch around 12 and dinner at 6pm. Her breeder said I can slowly wean her off her lunch feed because she won't need it and after a while she didn't want lunch, so now she has breakfast at 6am and dinner at 6am. Is this ok? She is not lethargic and is active. Also she does not have a poop soon after her meals like 'a puppy should', it takes her a good 2 hours or so, sometimes more if she naps! Is this normal? Sorry about all the questions but I hope someone can put my mind at ease that all is ok?

Sounds like a good schedule to me. I know that a lot of people would free-feed pups that are very small like that. Although it can make housebreaking more difficult and a longer process, it's better to prevent episodes of hypoglycemia by having food available at all times. But since your pup is eating a healthy amount and has a good activity level without any health problems like episodes of hypoglycemia, your schedule sounds fine to me. I started feeding Toki just twice a day once she was around 4 or 5 months because she just wouldn't eat lunch (well, she actually wouldn't eat breakfast until 11 AM or so because she wanted to nap in her sunspot instead!).She is also on the larger side so I haven't had any issues with blood sugar levels or whatnot. Also I think your pup not using the bathroom immediately after meals is normal if she is using the bathroom later. Eating meals should trigger the urge to use the bathroom but that isn't always the case. Sometimes Toki doesn't use the bathroom right after meals. It depends on the last time she went! Like if she goes on a late morning/afternoon walk and poops, she usually won't go immediately after dinner at 6 but will later when we walk around 9 or 10 at night. But if she only pooped after breakfast and we don't have a longer walk during the day, she will always go right after dinner (sometimes she'll get the urge half way through her meal and run over to our front door to ring the potty bells). I'm so glad to hear that you switched your baby from Pedigree to Orijen. Champion is an excellent company with quality products! If you don't mind me asking, how are your pup's stools on the Orijen? I've considered adding this to Toki's rotation but I'm concerned about her stools becoming too loose because of the richer formula. Just wondering! From what you've said, your pup sounds healthy. Just keep on observing her for any changes or issues that arise. It sounds like you're doing a good job with that anyway!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey's breeder told me to have food down 24/7 the first six months or so. In this way you avoid hypoglycemia. Puppies can use their energy reserves very quickly, and one of the symptoms of hypoglycemia, is lack of appetite, so if you wait too long, they won't even want to eat! I would have food down all the time, until your pup is at least 4 pounds.

Thanks so much for replying. Milly is doing well on Orijen. I think she found it a little hard to crunch them so the vet suggested we put a tiny bit of hot water on the kibble and let it soak for a few minutes so it becomes softer. This seems to have done the trick for her and she finishes her food real quick! However since sunday morning she has had runny stools which turned to diarrhea since yesterday. We went to the vet this morning and the vet said she is perfectly fine and suspected it was the little bits of cheddar cheese we gave her saturday evening that caused the bad tummy! No more cheese for the little one again!!!! I spoke to the vet this morning about feeding times and she recommended that she be fed every four hours or at least 3 meals a day until she is 6 months old as they stop growing around the 6-8 month mark. I've had three weeks off with her and going back to work next week is going to be tough...I was thinking I'll give her breakfast and leave her lunch before I leave so she can free feed when hungry and the dog sitter can give her another snack around 2.30pm...and I can give her her dinner around 6...I hope this will work and she will be ok! Oh how we worry about our little ones! I was so pleased to find yorkietalk! So much great info

We currently have a yorkie/pomeranian mix at our house (which will be my parent's dog once I move out) but of course I'm helping with all the training since I went through it once already with Sasha. Noah is eating twice a day. We were feeding him 3 meals but my parents were having issues with him waking up in the middle of the night having to poop so we eliminated the 3rd meal and the midnight poop issue was resolved. He has never been lethargic and his appetite is great. The meal times seem to be ok. I would just make sure to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't show signs of hypoglycemia. 12 hours is quite some time in between meals but if it happens to be working for her then that's great! Noah doesn't poop directly after he eats either. Usually he'll go about an hour or two after his meal. Every dog is different. You'll learn all about your puppy and her routines as she continues to get older. Congratulations on your new puppy. You have certainly come to the right place when it comes to advice.

How old is Noah now? and how old was he when you switched him to 2 meals? Milly is using her training pads at the moment. She is very good with her wee's on the pads she sometimes does her poops in the corner of her play pen which is where she sleeps at night. Her poop times are all over the place and by the time she is up by 5.30am I am greeting with a nice present from her that she has done in the middle of the night! Sometimes she has stepped on it and the cleaning process begins! Although I am enjoying her being a puppy if I am honest it can also be quite frustrating. I hope there is light at the end of the tunnel as the little one grows....
