Sounds like a good schedule to me. I know that a lot of people would free-feed pups that are very small like that. Although it can make housebreaking more difficult and a longer process, it's better to prevent episodes of hypoglycemia by having food available at all times.
But since your pup is eating a healthy amount and has a good activity level without any health problems like episodes of hypoglycemia, your schedule sounds fine to me. I started feeding Toki just twice a day once she was around 4 or 5 months because she just wouldn't eat lunch (well, she actually wouldn't eat breakfast until 11 AM or so because she wanted to nap in her sunspot instead!).She is also on the larger side so I haven't had any issues with blood sugar levels or whatnot.
Also I think your pup not using the bathroom immediately after meals is normal if she is using the bathroom later. Eating meals should trigger the urge to use the bathroom but that isn't always the case. Sometimes Toki doesn't use the bathroom right after meals. It depends on the last time she went! Like if she goes on a late morning/afternoon walk and poops, she usually won't go immediately after dinner at 6 but will later when we walk around 9 or 10 at night. But if she only pooped after breakfast and we don't have a longer walk during the day, she will always go right after dinner (sometimes she'll get the urge half way through her meal and run over to our front door to ring the potty bells).
I'm so glad to hear that you switched your baby from Pedigree to Orijen. Champion is an excellent company with quality products! If you don't mind me asking, how are your pup's stools on the Orijen? I've considered adding this to Toki's rotation but I'm concerned about her stools becoming too loose because of the richer formula. Just wondering!
From what you've said, your pup sounds healthy. Just keep on observing her for any changes or issues that arise. It sounds like you're doing a good job with that anyway! |
