				   | ok i took Mya to the vet yesterday because of this everyday throughout the day scratching. he checked her ears and said the ears are healthy he also checked her skin and said her skin looks healthy. she gets a monthly flea prevention medication so she doesnt have fleas nor mites. he saw three tiny red bumps in different spots on the inner side of her hind legs and said the scratching is definitely allergy related. he also said some dogs scratch more than others. there's nothing more than that other than the her shedding but he said the shedding is her puppy fur shedding. if she has allergy related problem does this get worse? he told me i can give her benadryl twice a day for the itching. im wondering if the shedding is because of the allergies and not just puppy shedding because of the amount she's shedding. there's never a handful of it or anything but its on my clothes when I've been holding her. |

				   | I think maybe it's the AllerG-3 capsules that's keeping her skin healthy looking..? |

				   | My Yorkie is VERY sensitive. He's a licker and a scratcher. But no real cause for either. I started adding a fish oil tablet to his meals, I cut the tablet and squeeze it onto the dry food (1 in morning 1 at night) and he itches much less in comparison to before and it seems a lot easier for him to do a #2. =0) |

They do not shed like other dogs do, but they do shed their puppy coat. Which will transfer to your clothing or in their doggy bed. A light brushing with a cat brush once a day usually takes care of it. Than once their adult coat comes in they will not shed unless brushed, which should be done once or twice a week.

| 2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | My Ruby struggles with allergies also...She gets a rash around her inner thigh area between her legs. The doc said to use Benadryl or an Antihistamines from the drug store. From my experience with leave in conditioners on my Yorkies they tend to get gritty or stiff after a few days. I just use reg. conditioner and just dont rinse it out thoroughly. It leaves the hair soft and doesn't matt. If you want to prevent matting you really need to groom every few days. Especially the cotton coats, they do matt and tangle way more than the smooth coat Yorkies. But until she looses her puppy coat matting is just going to be a part of life. Ruby is almost three and she doesn't matt or tangle near as much as she did when she was younger. I brush her every other week and a full bath and grooming once a month. Here is the link to my site on how to groom a Yorkie, maybe it will be helpful: Grooming - Dawn's Yorkies Ohio

				   | I looked up the allerg-3 and apparently it is an Omega-3 supplement. It will help your dog's skin and coat. Did the vet give you any indication of what your pet may be allergic to? It doesn't seem right just to treat something and not know what you are dealing with. Some dogs are allergic to the grains in dog foods. You might want to try a grain free food and see if it helps. It may take a few weeks to see a difference but it would be worth a try. There are some dog food companies that make a limited ingredient food that is specifically for dog's with food allergies. |

She did have a small rash in her inner thigh, too but it went away quick. I did show the vet. He told me it was allergy related. I visit a site call wag.com where I looked at a leave-in conditioner "8in1 Perfect Coat Natural Oatmeal/Almond Leave in Conditioner - 12 oz" from Perfect Coat. I didn't know if I should get it or not. Her first shampoo was from Perfect Coat but I went used it twice and switched to Hartz Soothing Botanicals shampoo with oatmeal and aloe. She's always pretty much soft. It just gets matted a little after she's been biting and licking at an itchy spot. I took her to a groomer once and had a bad experience with the grooming so I was hesitant in taking her again. Though I intend to take her back soon since the hair inside her ears has grown back. Thanks for sharing your link! | |

I don't know what it could be. I think it may be something in my house. What's sad is that I am allergic to something(s) in the house as well. I haven't the slightest clue. She started the itching before I switched her food. | |

				   | Now I'm more concerned. At the end of March I noticed that around the eyes is light pinkish red and mild hair loss. Yesterday I looked it up because before I was thinking it was allergy related. Especially since the vet told me about allergies. He said nothing about her eyes. I was reading about this mange thing. If a puppy has mange how long can they have it before hair loss starts? She has never had mites but I did give her medication that was given to me from the place I got her from when I complained about an odor coming from her ears. The medication cures bacteria/yeast/mites. He plucked the hairs from inside of her ears and looked at them. I saw nothing more than brown wax. I looked at photos of what mites look like inside dog's ear, so I'm certain she did not have mites. Either way, she was put on medication and took it for a week. That was two weeks after I got her. Even the first vet I was taking her to said she was healthy. If she had mange wouldn't it show up by now? She doesn't have bald spots on her. She does scratch but the 2nd vet said it was allergy related. He even looked at her skin and said it was healthy. I've actually parted her coat and thoroughly checked her skin. It looks normal to me. No redness, no scabbing, no bruising... nothing. What made me concern is the stories I read elsewhere on the internet and here about Demodectic Mange from other people regarding their pets. She's 19 weeks as of Thursday. She was already over 4 months when I notice the pink around her eyes. You don't notice it just looking at her, but if you are close or in better light, it's clear to see. It's close to the eyelids.. not that wide. There is no swelling though. She's been rubbing at her eyes now for about a week. Maybe about once or twice in a day. I've been giving her Benadryl since the vet told me to, but I don't everyday because it seems to make tired. I have a photo on my camera I'm going to upload today to show you. When I mentioned my concern to my hubby, he said I'm over reacting. He already thinks I'm too protective and cautious with her, and said she will be fine. I couldn't just throw off my concern, so I'm going to make another appointment with the vet but I wanted to know if anyone here has a pet that experienced this pinkish red around the eyes from allergies. Could be the same thing with dogs. Maybe you are over reacting a bit. but if you feel another visit to the bet is in order than go, better safe than sorry. Upload that photo so that we can get a better idea of what it is you are concerned about.

				   | The thing you describe with the ears sounds very much like ear mites or yeast or both. The mites cause a brown crud in the ears and so does yeast. Has that cleared up. You usually have to treat longer than one week for ear mites. I am concerned about a vet that would put a puppy on benadryl without even knowing what allergy he is dealing with. Did anyone mention the possibility of mange to you? It is a totally different type of thing than ear mites and has to be treated differently. She would have had to have been exposed to mange in order to get it. If there is hair loss around her eyes I would want a vet to check it out. The poor puppy cannot live on benadryl. Whatever the problem in needs to be addressed properly. Maybe a different vet? To check for mange the vet does a scraping of the skin and looks under a microscope. Ear mites have to be diagnosed by microscope also. You cannot see them with the naked eye. Last edited by gracielove; 04-13-2012 at 01:40 PM. Reason: Add |

				   | Im thinking a different vet or go back to the same one and tell him you want your dog tested for ear mites and mange. Let him know that you have done your home work and that this is what your are concerned about. If you dont get a good response or you are treated like the "over portective" mommy, move on. You are the paying customer and you are paying this guy to treat your baby. |
