Advice on the best food for yorkie with stomach issues Hi, I have posted a couple times in the emergency forum about my yorkie having issues with bloody diahhrea and constant vomiting. She is three pounds and a year and half. The vet currently has her on IAMs catfish and potato, but she still has loose stool and vomiting that she swallows (shes on reglan to prevent her from vomiting). She has a vet appointment tomorrow for grooming, a fecal sample, and I feel that she is loosing weight, and has developed a severe case of separation anxiety. I used to give her purina little bites and cesar dog treats which now that Ive read more about them I feel awful that I gave her such horrible food. I have also read IAMs is not very good for them either so I would like to try something that is actually good for her. I have read Blue Buffalo is good for them and I saw they had a new basic kibble that is grain free. Can I get any advice on wether I should try grain free diet for her and which brands of dog foods are the healthiest for her. Thanks so much! I really value any advice that can be given! Also as of right now they think she may have food allergies or I have gotten a second opinion that suggested it may be inflammatory bowel disease. She has been vomiting frequently since december 7th? two bloody diahhreas but other then that just normal or loose stools. Shes been on IAMs since the beginning of January. Talked to three vets about her situation and waiting until after the next appointment to see a stomach specialist.

Also shes eats like she normally does. If anything she acts like shes more hungry then before she got sick. I give her 1/4 of the can a day and divide the 1/4th up throughout the day. She also tries to eat her bowel movements which for the most part im there in time to stop her from doing.

I've always been a fan and supporter of Blue Buffalo dog foods. They have a line called Basics which are limited ingredient diets which are a good option for dogs that have food allergies. They also have a new line called Freedom which is a grain-free option with lower protein. Their line called Wilderness is also grain-free but the protein is much higher and not everyone is comfortable feeding a high protein food so Freedom is a good option. Not all dogs can tolerate Blue Buffalo though. Sometimes it's too rich of a food for some dogs to handle and with your little one having tummy troubles already, there may be a chance she may not be able to handle it. Natural Balance may be another option as well. It's a limited ingredient diet and I know maybe people that feed their dogs this food with no issues. They have several different formulas to choose from as well. Hopefully someone who's a bit more experienced with tummy issues responds and can give you some better insight. I'm not too familiar when it comes to certain health issues. Just remember also as with any food, when you change from one brand to another, especially if it's from a cheap brand to a higher quality brand, transition slowly especially with your pup since she has tummy issues already.

thanks so much about the advice on blue buffalo. Ill start to do a little research on natural balance and see what I can come up with. Do you know if grain free is better for them and is grain free the same as hydrolized dog food?

| I don't know anything about the medical issues she's having, so hopefully you can consult a vet to find out more, which it sounds like you have in the past. As for foods for allergy sufferers - California Natural always seems to get mostly positive reviews. Natural Balance has lots of options too. Nature's Variety has an LID line. Acana also now has a LID line sold in the US (Lamb & Apple, Chicken and Potato and Duck and Pear). Royal Canin has also some nice RX foods. I know there's more - but those are some that come to mind. Some don't mind Iams, Cesars, etc, but I personally don't like them. I've seen lots of dogs improve when switching from a food like Iams to a food like Acana, but that's just in my small experience with dogsitting, family dogs, friends dogs, etc.

I took Daisy to the vet today and discussed with her about switching her to Natural Balance Salmon and sweet potato. The vet seemed to think it would be ok as long as I switch her slowly. So I started the switch when I got home today. I also talked to her about putting her on probiotics. She suggested purina fortiflora. Daisy had this the last time she was sick and seemed to do ok, but every since shes had stomach issues again i research everything I give her. I read that the purina fortiflora has horrible ingredients used to flavor it and some dogs have negative stomach reactions to it. Is there any suggestions on a probiotic that would be easy on her tummy?
