| Mosquito Trap question I followed a link awhile back, which led me to a website exploring a more natural approach to heartworm prevention. It discussed all the current meds, as well as some alternative methods. I lost the bookmark to this website, and cannot find it anywhere. Ive searched and searched the web to no end. It had this great idea about making mosquito traps out of small cans, wire mesh, water, dawn soap, and one additional ingredient that i cant recall. Id like to find the site again and was hoping someone here might know either the site, or the ingredients for these little mosquito traps. I remember that the website had two small maps, which number coded the country into sections based on when the mosquito cycled started, and ended each year. Thanks in advance |

| I would never play around with heart worms and would make sure to give my dog the monthly heart warm pill.

I simply want the recipe for the mosquito traps that was listed on the the website, in order to prevent my wife, our dog, and myself from being bitten by mosquito's while sitting on our porch. Seemed like a very natural, non-toxic way to stop mosquitos. Once again, if someone happens to know this website, as I followed a link from YT, it would be greatly appreciated. | |

| Most everyone around here puts out ziplock bags with water to keep them away. Not sure if it works or not.

| I've heard that planting lemon grass and lemon thyme are good to deter mosquitos. I'm going to try that this year. I'll plant them in large planters on the patio. I think every mosquito in NY lands on me!! Good luck with your search for mosquito traps! |

| thanks for the info and advice. The website mentioned taking those 1 gallon size little metal buckets, and filling them with water, cutting some wire mesh and fixing to the top. In the water it said to put some dawn and one other ingredient. I'm thinking it might be yeast as this would convert to carbon dioxide and attract the mosquitos. I just cannot remember for sure and in what amounts. The dawn, and wire mesh would make it very difficult to exit, once inside. The site mentioned how you could decorate the cans anyway you like, which seemed like a good idea. Might try this with the yeast, but i wish i could just remember that website. I really dislike getting old. |

| A friend of mine, whose father used to be in the plant nursery business in Lousiana swears by wax myrtle. He insists that planting it in your yard and using the leaves and branches it would combat mosquitoes and fleas, much like citronella does. I've never tried it myself, but if the critters get to be too much this summer, I may give it a go! |

| Thanks so much. I tried searching earlier but my search kept turning up weird ideas. I tried once more after your post and sure enough (using your wording), i found a similar concept. Thanks.... i knew it was yeast! |

We use lemon grass, lemon verbena and mint. They don't like it and our patio area stays skeeter free

| We do this with a penny and it's supposed to deter flies.

| I don't care what kind of mosquito control you have, there will always be mosquitos. To refer to it as a natural way to prevent heartworms in dogs is misleading. It might make sitting out in your yard a bit more pleasant, but it won't prevent heartworms in your dogs. The only way to prevent heartworms is to use heartworm preventatives or live somewhere where there are no mosquitos. If you live in LA or TX or states like them, your dogs will always be at high risk.
