| Puppy scratched lip open - ideas? Hi, I'm the one with the open lip, not the puppy - this is also in the wrong section; sorry! Bella (completely accidentally, she's not a vicious puppy), tore my lip open with her claws this morning. She was at the vet's about a week ago and we have them clip their claws since I'm too chicken to do it. I could have them filed too but I didn't think it necessary. Well, I'll get them filed as well from now on, but in any case, I picked Bella up from her playpen this morning and she freaked out like she always does (so cute), started licking my cheek (she knows the mouth is a no no). Well, she reached up to pat my chin and accidentally ripped my lip open. There's now a large bump there, and I'm wondering if I should call my 'people doctor' for some antibiotics or if I can just put a little neosporin on it throughout the day until it heals or...? This hasn't happened before so I'm just wondering who has ideas to help heal it and if I should be on antibiotics? Once again, she didn't mean to, it wasn't on purpose. I only let her lick my cheeks in the morning because she's super excited to see her person when she wakes up. Most of you have owned a small puppy; they aren't violent creatures. Her paws wiggle around all over the place when she's excited like that. I feel VERY BAD for her!! I said omg ouch when she did it and you could just see the look on her face. She knew she hurt her person and she felt so bad. I did get the bleeding stopped very quickly, and washed it with hot soap and water (ouch). I then rinsed with Listerine and already put a dab of Neosporin on it. Last edited by MorkieMomma; 12-22-2011 at 06:58 AM. |

Aww.. I know she didn't do it on purpose, but working in the medical field you should monitor it.. for dog bites I know we give Tetanus shots just in case..and depending on how bad maybe anabiotic. if it were me and it did bleed I would call my doctor just in case for piece of mind.. if not if it feels feverish and hurts bad.. don't wait to go in.. I wish I could see it to let you know better.. good luck.. next time ask the person who is clipping Bella's nail to file them for you.. Bella baby we still love you...big hugs..

| That had to of hurt!! Keep it clean once or twice a day, keep neosporine on it several times a day and keep an eye on it. If you think an infection is developing, dont wait to seek medical help. Hope it heals quickly. |

| That reminds me of when I was a kid and we got our first puppy (we already had an adult dog that was a rescue) my dad picked him up and the puppy was like what the heck is that thing on this guys face (big hairy beard) well he thought he would try to dig in it and cut my dad's lip. I think it will be ok but I would just keep and eye on it. I too learned very quickly that paying extra for the filed nails is so worth it but never had my lip scratched open. Hope it heals fast.

| The thing is, even if it does get bad, I'm not sure what to do. I guess I could lie, but I hate lying with a passion, and not fond of liars. We have a city ordinance where if anyone goes to the hospital, doctor's office, or any other medical establishment for the care of an animal-inflicted wound (regardless of the severity mind you), the animal (domesticated or not) must be confiscated and confined for 72 hours. During that time they are manhandled by people, and temperament tested, etc. Bella weighs 2 lbs and she is just a puppy. It was completely accidental and no way in heaven or hell or anywhere else I would put her through that. I'm not comfortable with revealing our city of residence online to strangers yet, but suffice it to say this ordinance stinks. I've had friends with their cats in there for no reason (IE: infected cat scratch). IF the animal is domesticated and does not have a rabies vaccination (Bella doesn't have it), they keep the animal in their custody until it has one. On another note, I slammed my finger in the car door last month. They gave me a prescription for something called Keflex in case of infection. I never filled the prescription because my finger healed on it's own. Would that medicine apply for an animal-inflicted wound? It's pretty gross looking. I think she hurts more than I do, the poor little thing keeps dropping her toys at my feet. I threw her ball for her but she wouldn't chase it, she just laid at my feet pitifully like she was giving me her toys as a sorry. She has no desire to play and I know she's not sleepy (her blood sugar level is fine). I wish I hadn't gasped like I did and said ouch so loudly, it probably scared the crap out of her. |
