| Sarcoptic Mange Help Needed My mom loves Tucker so much she decided to buy herself a yorkie yesterday. He is very cute little guy, and is 12 weeks old. She took him to the vet this morning to get a health check and vet said he has sarcoptic mange. The vet was ok with her keeping him, said other than that was a healthy puppy. He said just treat it with adams flea and tick shampoo once a week for three weeks and keep him isolated from our other dogs. My mom is freaking out about it and I think she is returning the puppy this afternoon to the breeder. I wanted her to keep him. This is treatable right? Am I telling her the correct advice to hang in there, treat him, and all will be OK? The word mange does sound scary! Yuk! Any advice on this subject GREATLY appreciated. Tucker's MOM |

Is she getting a replacement yorkie? I would think long and hard about it before I returned him. If it were something that was going to require lots of medical treatment it would be different. But, it's just my opinion. Hopefully she will change her mind. Please keep us posted.

| mange RiniW bought a male adult some years ago and he had this type mange. You shoudl contact her...Whispersmom for advise. She had it spread to all her dogs and it was very time consuming and costly to rid her house. It is much easier to deal with of you have no other animals..hard to keep a pup totally isolated for weeks..good luck and tell the breeder so they can treat all their dogs, it is very itchy for animals to have it. |

| Thank you for your replies. She has decided to keep the pup. She treated it tonight. I hope is was the right decision. It is amazing how attached she got in just 24 hours. She loves him very much. She is 76 and lives alone and he has just fit right in. He is totally puppy pad trained. A very calm puppy which is perfect for her. I can't wait until he gets well so he and Tucker can meet. I am so happy for my mother but sad about the medical issues. |

| I have firsthand experience with this. It cannot just be treated with bath; you have to use anti-biotics. If he has it in his ear, you need ear drops as well. My Yorkie lost fur and was very itchy for weeks.

| Oh, boy! Years and years ago I had a little chihuahua and the vet told me she was born with that stuff. It's been a long time ago, so forgive my memory. It seems like it took me four to five months of very intensive care to get rid of it. She had to be dipped in this stinky yellowish stuff three times a week. It smelled sooooooooooo bad! She hated it just as much. I didn't feel like that was working so great, so I did something (I don't remember now if I read about it somewhere or what now) like mix that yellow sulphur powder with vaseline and put on the places where she had that. I would leave that on for awhile and then give her a bath. Actually, I think that is what got rid of it! It was so sad, because most of her puppy months were spent with this awful stuff. I loved her and wanted to cure her of having it and I feel like she would have died if she hadn't had intensive care as she did have, because she had it so bad. She had big spots on her back that were scabby and the hair had fallen out. It had a happy ending, because I got rid of it and she grew in a beautiful coat of hair. It was so nice and thick and she lived happily ever after.

| Aww, so sorry your mom's pup is sick with mange. It is treatable but it takes work. When I got Gucci she had ringworm. It took me 4 to 5 months to get rid off it. She had to take some oral medicine and I had to bath her with a medicated shampoo and do the lyme dip every 5 days. It was time consuming and we really couldnt enjoy her as much but she is perfectly fine now. Her hair has grow back and you can't never tell that she had ringworm. Like your mom, we felt in love with Gucci and coudlnt returned her. I like your mother views of the problem. They will bond and love each other very much. |

| Usually this type of mange is treated with an Ivermectin shots. Bia had this and she was given the shot and 2 weeks later given another one. Bathing is not the most effective way to get rid of it. Also it can make her itch as well, but just to let you know, dog mites cannot live on humans skin, they just can irritate the crap out of it.

YT 3000 Club Member | I give ny guy revolution flea stuff it covers more than advantage, it covers the sarcoptic mange, american dog tick, ear mites, and heartworm it is not a pesticide like the other stuff so alot of places you need a prescription for it. I dont know if he is old enough for it yet, check it out first, it will be good preventative when he is older and you need to do the flea thing. |

Tip: I am from a long time hunting family in the south.....from as long as I can remember my Dad had a "pack" of hunting hounds of various breeds. Sometimes one would come down with the mange....being that they were outside working dogs it was just a fact of life. One of Dad's dogs came down with mange and no amount of care or meds would get rid of it....in those days we used sulfer and oil to dip the dog. Dad took her to the vet to have her put down so she would not suffer any longer. This old time country vet told my Dad to try one more thing before he put her to sleep......WD-40!! Yep that's right this old vet had found quite by accident that WD-40 worked on skin ailments like mange and hot spots. He told Dad to spray her down every other day with it. Well it worked!! Within a few weeks she was better and on the road to health. I am not advocating anyone try this!! I just find that sometimes the old treatments work well. I have tried it rarely on a Yorkie who has a skin itch....and it does work....but it's always best to follow your vet's advice. | |
