He said just treat it with adams flea and tick shampoo once a week for three weeks and keep him isolated from our other dogs. My mom is freaking out about it and I think she is returning the puppy this afternoon to the breeder. I wanted her to keep him. This is treatable right? Am I telling her the correct advice to hang in there, treat him, and all will be OK? The word mange does sound scary! Yuk! Any advice on this subject GREATLY appreciated. Tucker's MOM
Yes mange is treatable.....I hope your mom keeps him. I don't think his future would be nearly as bright if she returned him. IMO....you should seek the advice of another vet. The mange is not usually treated Adam flea shampoo. If he truly has mange he needs more intense therpy IMO. He may need an antibotic for skin infection from itching skin. I think Ivermetin is used for mange and maybe Revolution. Good luck

Tip: I am from a long time hunting family in the south.....from as long as I can remember my Dad had a "pack" of hunting hounds of various breeds. Sometimes one would come down with the mange....being that they were outside working dogs it was just a fact of life. One of Dad's dogs came down with mange and no amount of care or meds would get rid of it....in those days we used sulfer and oil to dip the dog. Dad took her to the vet to have her put down so she would not suffer any longer. This old time country vet told my Dad to try one more thing before he put her to sleep......WD-40!! Yep that's right this old vet had found quite by accident that WD-40 worked on skin ailments like mange and hot spots. He told Dad to spray her down every other day with it. Well it worked!! Within a few weeks she was better and on the road to health. I am not advocating anyone try this!! I just find that sometimes the old treatments work well. I have tried it rarely on a Yorkie who has a skin itch....and it does work....but it's always best to follow your vet's advice.
