I noticed that you said your dogs are stubborn about eating. My dog Monti (10 months)is a horrible eater. It is driving me insane because in the past when she hasn't eaten she will either throw up yellow bile or has had two vet visits due to hyperglycemia. It has been so frustrating. I am feeding her royal canin for yorkies 28 and she has eaten this type more than any other but we still have days where she refuses to eat. Any suggestions? Or Empathy to make me not feel so bad and worry?

My dog does the same thing...hyperglycemia and it happens at night late or on sundays. I feel for you and am very scared and frustrated myself. If you find anything out please let me know and I will do the same.

Hi i know this is an old thread, but i have had similar experinces with Brew.

he's 8 months and 9.2 lbs so low blood sugar doesn't seem to fit the bill for us either.

have you made any progress with her diagnoses? Brew's head was wobbly this morning like he was having hypo. i got him to eat a scrambled egg easily and then some kibble an hour later. he perked up and i canceled the vet appointment because they said they wouldn't be able to do anything if he was acting normal.

he had a full blood pannel and bile acid done at 3 months of age when he was having similar attacks. they said everything was normal. they did another blood test last month before his neuter and it was good then as well.

so unsure of what to do for him. it's been months since he has had an attack and now he has had one last friday and now one today. but he always comes out of it within a few hours of feeding and rest.

Hi Brewfilek,
My dog is now a little over a year old (one year and four months). We haven't had an episode since last june 2011. She is eating much better than she was when she was younger. Her eating got much better after the vet removed 7 baby teeth from her tiny mouth. Now she has an adult mouth and is eating so much better. There is no doubt that her lack of eating had to do with the extra teeth she retained. The Vet said, if the hypoglycemia happens again to rub karo syrup or nutrical on her gums and bring her into the vet right away. I haven't had to do this, yet and hope that I won't have to. Those episodes are so scary.

When you mean, "his head was wobbly" what do you mean? Does your dog act lethargic, too? I always check the color of her gums to see what color they are. If they are anything other than pink or faint pink I know she is getting dehydrated or needs to eat.

I am hoping this is just something that little yorkies go through and then it passes. Make sure she is drinking water a lot and eating. Mine eats more than she is probably suppose to but I am not taking any chances. Does your dog really weigh 9 pounds? I know I was rambling but I hope I helped, some what.

yes, he acted almost like he could be drunk or something. his head was wobbleing about and he seemed tierd. he's perked right up again as the day progressed i've got him to eat and drink lots. he's gone to the bathroom and now he's just playing with a ball at my feet.

i was mostly curious because the op also has a larger yorkie, so it's uncommon for these guys to get low suagrs.

i think that it's something else that is affecting him...i pulled all the plants out of the rocks he likes to climb on in our back yard today...it's possible he may be eating something in there that is causing him to react this way.

and yes he IS 9.2 lbs of burning love he has stayed steady at that weight for about a month i'm thinking he is done most of his growing.

glad to hear your little guy is doing much better.

Brew hasn't had one of these episodes in like 4 months so i thought/hoped he had grown out of this

If he is having hypoglycemic episodes you need to talk to you vet about it. There are some really serious things that can cause hypoglycemia. Callie would become unresponsive, not eat even her favorite food if placed in front of her, she would be very week unable to hold her self up and her gums would be pale. I would get some sugar in her asap and after a minute or too she would start to respond and sit up on her own and then would eat her food from my hand and I would get some food into her so it would not drop again. I always keep nutrical now. Callie is 16 pounds and she is 4 years old so she isn't a tiny puppy. Our vet really checked everything out and did lots and lots and lots of blood work and found nothing and she had checked Callie out physically very good so she felt like there was nothing seriously wrong with Callie but just because nothing was wrong with Callie does not mean that its normal because its not.

If this were me... I'd repeat the Bile Acid test, full panel bloodwork, and get a neuro consult.

i definitly plan to run more tests. i would have yesterday but the vets couldn't get me in for 6 hours, and by that time i was able to get him back to 100%. it was maybe only a 2 hour period that he was wobbly.

he was able to drink and eat on his own when he was crashing. and never vomited or fell over. never paced around. never done the head pressing.

it really just seems like he was drugged or something.

he will chew on our ikea wood bed post legs and does like to rip at the plants on the rocks in our yard. i've removed the plants and i'm getting some bitter apple today to stop the bed chewing.

it's been 3-4 months since the last times this has happned and in total we have had 6 attacks.

the full blood pannel and bile testing we did run 4 months ago was during an attack time, and they were unable to find levels that were abnormal on anything. they tested stool as well.

i'll do anything get to the bottom of this though. it kills me to see him not at his best.

Wobbly for two hours doesn't sound like hypoglycemia but it sounds like something that needs to be talked to the vet about and not put off to long.

thanks for the link!
yes i do plan on getting him checked out again and having a full blood work/neutro/bile acid done again.

i spoke with my vets at length on the phone (again) and they advised me to (again) wait until he is displaying some syptoms they may be able to daignose. I called them in a panic after being advised on here to take him back right away even after recovering.

i've already spent 100's of dollars on tests for him that have all come back completly normal, so they told me i'm going to be wasting my money if i bring in a bouncy healthy dog. that if it were them they would wait and see how he is.

they have flagged my account at the vet so that i can get a priority appointment if he shows any syptoms again.

trust me i'm not leaving this just so i can save a few bucks. i'm listening to the vet that my family has trusted for over 30 years.

if he doesn't show any more syptoms in the next two months (when he turns 1 year) i'm still going to get the full blood work/bile test done so that we have a solid record to go by if something comes up in the future.

Thanks to everyone for your concern

Consider having a camera ready to take a video of his symptoms, should they reoccur, so the vet can see exactly what you are seeing that is causing concern...
