Hypoglycemia in an adult dog Im posting this hoping someone could please have some information on this and share it with me. Callie has issues of what I would call hypoglycemia but is an adult dog. I have talked to my vet about it who said she has never heard of it in an adult dog and I would almost need to bring Callie in right when shes having one of these issues but her office is 30 minutes away I am to scared to wait that long when I see the symptoms of it. I do plan to talk to her about it again at Callies yearly appointment on Tuesday. When Callie is very active, has a very stressful day, or is not feeling well she gets very lethargic, limp like and her gums get very pale so if I can get her to eat something that has some sugar in it i do but its very hard to get her to eat anything so I use the nutrical then and after a few minutes she starts to not be so limp and I get her to eat a few bites of dog food and she is more alert. Has any one had or heard of an adult dog with hypoglycemia or have any information on it? |
How old is Callie and what does she weigh? I was drawn to your thread because my Winston has seizures that my vet believes are brought on by low blood sugar. Yes, I did take him immediately to my vet the very first time this happened, which is only a couple blocks from my home. His blood sugar at that time was 25. Since then he has been through many test and nothing else out of the ordinary has been found. I feed him multiple small meals throughout the day, and I attempt to keep him somewhat calm. He still has an occasional seizure, but not often enough to treat. I can't say he becomes limp or lethargic...but Nutrical will bring him out of it. Has your vet mentioned insulinoma to you? I don't mean to frighten you, but that was my vets first thought. Hope you find out just what is causing Callie to have this problem, I never have. But Winston is 4 years older now, and for the most part is doing well. |

Has your vet ran any thyroid test on Callie? An underactive thyroid can have similar symptoms. Insulinoma is highly unlikely, but I thought I'd put it out there beings that was my vet's first thought. Winston started having his problems when he was 3 years old. I was terrified, but he seems to be doing pretty darn good lately. |

So sorry. But I hope someone has some ideas for you and questions to ask your vet. I hope some of the members have like, Nancy, LadyJane, EllieMay and/ or Barney see this thread they may have some suggestions for you. Hugs and prayers |
Has your baby been checked for liver shunt ? if not I think that would be my 1st check, that & the thyroid. I hope you get some answers soon. |
Agree with the others, I would certainly have the vet running some tests as soon as possible. A full blood panel and bile acids to start with at least. Adult dogs usually don't have hypoglycemia issues for no reason- my dogs, who are both 5 pounds, have gone days without eating if they are bring stubborn and have never shown any symptoms. |
I have made a list to take to the vet with me tomorrow to make sure I dont forget anything to ask/talk to the vet about. I will be asking our vet to check the things yall have mentioned. Everyone has been great help. Thank you so very much. Also please say a prayer that its nothing very bad. Thanks again. |
How did the vet visit go ?Praying all is well. |
Sorry it took me so long to get on here today it was a crazy day we where on the way to the vet when the earthquake hit which really raised my anxiety that was already high about the vet visit and then Callie got two shots today so I was babying her. Anyway the vet listened to my concerns and is doing a bunch of blood tests and sent them away as well as a urinalysis and her fecal she was due for as well. It will be 3 to 5 days on the results. Waiting is not fun. The vet did tell me if I am unable to bring her in to the office when she is having one of the episodes to take her blood with my diabetes meter and showed me where to prick her and then I would call her and tell her what I got. |
Oh, I am glad to see this post - have been worried and thinking about Callie all day and what your results were. And on top of all this you are going through with her - an earthquake!!! Sounds like maybe you can be getting some answers with the test results and that meter. I pray this baby can get some treatment so she won't have to go through this much longer. I will continue to pray for a good answer for Callie. Try to get some rest for tonight - you have done all you can until you get some answers and I pray they will be hopeful and helpful for little Callie. |

It's unusual for a dog adult dog over 5 pounds to have hypoglycemia, as the common cause is just not having enough fat or energy reserves like we would see in puppies. An adult dog does require further investigation. Here’s what one site says about some of the causes. Quote:
