I Am Worried

Could anyone help me on this problem? My little Kinder turned one years old on April 3,2011. Anyways on April 18 she had some bouts with emptying out with diarrea. I thought this was strange so I took her in and my vet diagnosed her with campylobacter infection . He put her on amoxicillan and she cleared up with normal hard stools. Also he gave her FortiFlora for her intestines. I quit giving her bullysticks because my vet said he had some problems with dogs having them. Anyways all is fine until last Wedneday she empied out with real mushy poop. Right away I brought her in and they could not find anything with her poop sample just some irratation with a plant material. I give her pineapple for poop eating which I probably could of stopped because she doesn't eat her poop anymore. My vet gave her 1ml.of metronadazole twice a day for 5 days and said to keep her on the fortiFlora. Stopped the pineapple. Two days later after her morning dose of Metronadazole she was not herself just tired. Called the vet and he said to stop her meds if her poop was normal which it was. By afternoon she was great and playful. Saturday she had her normal poops and the last one was at 9:30pm. Yesterday Sunday she was full of life but did not poop til 3:30pm in the afternoon which was 18 hours and it was a mushy pile. Then again at 8:15pm another mushy poop. I called my vet and he said if she is eating and drinking and feels good wait til today. It is almost noon and she has not pooped so that is over 13 hours. I feed her Fromms Whitefish and Fromms Chicken but now I quit the chicken on her. She gets Zukes mini natural treats and Fromms Lowfat cheese and not too many. May 1st she got her first Heartguard Plus but she seemed fine. I hope she doesn't have a partial blockage. She ate good today and happy and full of life. Any suggestions? I am going to call my vet after lunch. Thanks Oh she is not outside and not around other dogs.

I am sorry to hear poor Kinder is having poop issues. I know when Buster was on a lot of antibiotics I started giving him Pet Dophilus and that has helped. Best wishes. Pet Dophilus

Since she's been on the FortiFlora, that should help her and actually may be helping which is why she's not going much. The pineapple could have irritated her tummy a bit since it's acidic, but you stopped that. Hmm, idk - I'd maybe take her back to the vet and he can give her an anti-diarrhea medicine, then (as long as he doesn't find any problems of course - you can ask for an abdominal xray to set your mind at ease) I'd probably go with a bland diet for a few days in addition to the FortiFlora. Between her original infection ,then the antibiotics, adding the digestive enzymes, then the other rx, could just take a bit of time to get her back to normal. You can also try about 1 tsp. of canned pumpkin (NO spices) to add some fiber to her diet for a few days. Let us know what the vet says

I just talked to my vet and he said to wait a little longer. If she poops and it is mushy to bring her and a sample in. She is eating good and drinking but no poop; I think I would be miserable. I will keep you posted on how she is doing. If I bring her in today I may ask for a x ray also.

It's frustrating isn't it? I go nuts trying to "fix" it when one of my furkids has weird poop lol. Funny thing is, I don't worry if I get a little "off" for a few days, but then again, they all eat much better than I do lol. Hopefully she goes soon and it's normal and you can relax. Try taking her for a nice long walk if you can, that usually helps to get things moving

Well guess what ; my little furkid pooped at 3:30 this afternoon and this time it was formed and normal. Now I can sleep tonight it is tough when these little kids get sick. I always go without and the furbaby gets everything but I guess that is what good moms are for. I feel they have short lives so I want my little Kinder to have everything. I even bought her pet insurance so she can have good healthcare. Hey thanks for the help.

Yay!! So gald she's better Now Alice has had "soft" stools for a few days and diarrhea this morning, ugh. I did do a food change, so I'm sure it's just that. Chicken breast boiling on the stove as I type and vet tomorrow if she's not back to normal. These little ones sure do have sensative tummies

She didn't eat all her dryfood so I thought let's bring her in. My vet ran a smear on her poop and sure enough she had a little campylobacter infection. Last time he treated her with amoxicillin but this time he is using Clavamox. When she is done I have to bring in a poop sample he said sometimes these infections take awhile to get rid of. Now I hope Alice is doing ok and glad you are like me staying on top of it for these little ones.Keep me posted on how she is doing. Susan

Wiley had campylobacter infection too when I got him and had to be on Amoxicillin twice before he got rid of it. I hope Kinder gets to feeling better soon. This stuff can bring them down fast... be careful as us humans can get it as well. Take care!!!

I am glad I got her in our vet said it was not a bad infection. He said not to give her bullysticks anymore so I stopped that. He figured she got this from her bullysticks because he has had dogs have problems. She misses those so much so Friday I am going to Petco in Duluth and see what I can get her.I do not take her out either because our grass is full of deer poop and you have to watch out for that. Aww, poor Kinder, well at least you know what's going on for sure now and she's on the mend.
Alice was fine today, little, solid, perfectly normal poop lol. I fasted her breakfast yesterday and then gave 3 TINY meals later of boiled chicken breast with some white rice slurry mixed with pumpkin. Did the trick. I'm going to continue the chicken and rice for today though anyway and go back to her food tomorrow.

Do you ever give bullysticks to Alice? My Kinder feels so bad because the vet said no more bullysticks. I bought her a chicken flavored nylabone and she seems to like that. I hope this infection wipes out this time I know my vet said they can be stubborn so I will have to bring in her poop sample. She is full of energy today and eating up a storm ; I have her napping now so I can have a little time for myself. I bet Alice will be happy to get her other food but I am sure she likes mom's home cooking.

I was having problems with Cali getting sick and figured out it was from the cow hooves they all loved so much. I threw them all out and it made all the difference. I felt bad too because they missed them but they got over it. Now they only get nylabones and they learned to like them.

I do give her bully sticks, but I only use the Merrick ones and she actually doesn't put much of a dent in them anyway lol. She chews on them, but doesn't seem to actualy eat much of it. She gobbled up her dinner and has been running around here playing all day like normal. Since it cleared up so easily, I'm chalking it up to the food switch. My Akita LOVES flavored Nylabones. I see that a lot of people here like Himalayan chews too, so I'm going to pick up some of those and maybe use them in place of the bully sticks since my other two bigger dogs eat them right up. Don't want a problem with them either.

I am glad you told me about cow hooves because I was thinking about getting Kinder some. Well I will stick to the nylabones then there shouldn't be any problems. My vet is strongly against bully sticks for Kinder. Thanks so.....much for the imformation. Susan
