| Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers????? My son's friend is a vet. I spoke with her, and she said to stop giving my 2 Cesar wet, not good for them. They do get Beneful Small bites kibble throughout the day. I was wondering what the consensus on Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terriers is, and is it sold in Canada?!

| Royal Canin is better than either one you mentioned in your post. Please read the labels on the food you buy or plan to buy in the future. There was a dog food grading thread some time back. You can do a search for it and see how the various brands stack up against each other and the grading system. I try to feed the best I can afford. Minimize the fillers. The younger 3 of my gang are fed Natural Balance Potato and Duck limited ingredients and Merrick canned. The 16 yr old is on Science Diet Kidney (KD). Bob

| Beneful and Cesar foods are both pretty gross, to be bluntly honest. Or you could buy a higher quality kibble and still give them some Cesar mixed in every now and then (I do this on occasion, maybe 3x a month). I don't personally like Royal Canin either. I think it's highly over-priced for what it is. It's got corn, among other questionable ingredients. However, some Yorkies do perfectly on it and it's definitely better than Beneful. My fav kibbles are Acana (Champion Pet Foods) and Go! (Petcurean Pet Foods).... both of those are made in Canada. But other options available at Petco/Petsmart are Natural Balance, Wellness, Solid Gold, Merrick, etc. Check out Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings

| I personally don't want to feed Royal Canin. If you want to, it is available at Petsmart in Canada. However, I don't like the fact that it has corn. I personally like to feed Fromm Four Star which can be found at Global Pets Food. You can google search and they have locations listed. I want Yuna's food to have meat as the first ingredient and ensure that it is not animal by product. I'm happy with Fromm eventhough it isn't grain free, but she happy with it. I tried a bunch of brands before I settled with Fromm. I live in Ontario and Global Pets Food has fabulous return policy if your furbaby doesn't like the food. |

| I have used Royal Canin in the past. There are MANY different formulas and they all DO NOT HAVE CORN in them. The Yorkshire Terrier formula does have corn gluten meal in it. I fed the Mini Indoor 21 -- it has no corn at all. It is good if your dog spends almost all of its time inside. Mine do -- they only go out to do their business and when I take them out for exercise. Mine did well on it but then a local hardware store started stocking all kinds of premium brands. So, I switched to Solid Gold Just a Wee Bits. They do great on it too. I have used several brands over the years and to tell the truth, they do well on all of them. I stay away from any of the brands they sell in the grocery store as well as the Science Diet & Eukanuba you see in the vet's offices. Here is a link to a dog food review site. Any of the 4 star and above foods should be fine. I do avoid high protein content though (nothing over 35%). Dog Food Reviews - Dry Dog Foods - Powered by ReviewPost We are all so picky about what we feed our dogs, but the truth is they will probably do well on most any of the better brands of food. Some have sensitivity to corn, wheat, and other ingredients. So, you have to make allowances for that. I figure they eat so little, I want to give them the best that is available. I ordered food for them online for years but now that there is pretty good food locally, I am using that. So far, I am very pleased with Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit -- it is a 4 star food on the review list.

| Thanks everyone - I will definitely change to a better brand, and I do know about meat being first in the ingredients. I want to feed them the best to keep them healthy and around as long as possible - with good teeth!!!!

| Orijen and Acana I only feed my baby Orijen, made in Canada. And since you are already in Canada....you should really look into that. It's same company that makes Acana. I email'd the company before asking for the difference between Orijen and Acana and this is the response I got: While there are many differences between ACANA and ORIJEN, both diets reflect our belief in “Biologically Appropriateness”. Five main points of difference are summarized below: 1. MEAT CONCENTRATION: ORIJEN is made with 70-75% meat ingredients while ACANA has between 40 to 65%, depending on the formula. 2. AMOUNT OF PROTEIN: ORIJEN diets range between 38% and 42% protein, while ACANA features protein levels of 29-34%. 3. AMOUNT OF CARBOHYDRATE: ORIJEN diets range from 18-22% of carbohydrate, while ACANA diets are typically in the 28-30% carbohydrate range. 4. AMOUNT OF FRESH MEAT: ORIJEN is made with 28-40% of fresh meats, compared with ACANA which is made with 20% of fresh meats. 5. VARIETY OF FRESH MEAT: ORIJEN contains a minimum of 5 fresh meats, compared to ACANA which contains 3 different fresh meat ingredients. Put simply, we believe ORIJEN is the best dry dog or cat food available worldwide. While lower in protein and total meat content than ORIJEN, ACANA provides unbeatable value and a price point that makes Biologically Appropriate pet foods accessible to a wider range of pet lovers. Take some time and view the company's video. You'll see that their food is better than many human grade food. Champion Petfoods | Home |

| Orijen - do you know what retail stores sell it. Also, does your puppy like it- I wonder if I would have a hard time gradually changing them over from Beneful....

| I want to feed them the best...it's hard to decide with so many out there! I do like to give them a little wet food at dinnertime. I have a small bowl of kibble down at all times, and I only fill it every 2-3 days, so I don't think they are over eating. It's weird though, that I bought expensive wet Wellness ($3+ a can) and they wouldn't eat it, but if I make a 'people' stew - give them a small spoonful, and they love it?????

Yes, Mocha loves Orijen. I switched from Blue Buffalo puppy to Orijen puppy and stayed with Orijen ever since. He is now on half Orijen Adult and half Orijen All Fish. The reason for the all fish is that he had dry skin for a while and my vet recommended trying the fish formula. After his skin problem went away, I kept him on half fish since he loves it so much. | Remember, your babies might seem to like cheaper dog foods more because they consume more, but that is because the cheaper foods have more fillers (junk they don't need) so they need to eat more to get the nutrient they need. For the long run, it is not only better for the dog to eat healthy, it's cheaper for you since you buy less. |
