Vet refuses to do Spay AND Extractions

Sorry to be so picky, but...
Blood Work ?, is that a "set" number of tests done, or
must I ask for specific test, or testS to be included ?

What I'm asking is, what exactly are we looking for

It's regular blood panel, I don't know what all is involved. Others can probably tell you that. I was told on here before spay ask for pre-blood work, which I did. I believe it checks for any possible issues prior to their be put under.

Anyone know what all if checks for...what issues it would flag?

Contact Ladyjane (PM her)...since she works with Rescue she knows some of the best vets in the Houston area, vet's that are very knowledgable about yorkies....

Banfield is only interested in how to obtain money....As already stated.....in is much easier on the dog to put it under anesthesia once for spay and extractions....

A CBC (complete Blood count) is an evaluation of everything that is going on within your dog's body....White Cell, Red Cell...Kidney, Heart, Bile....it alerts the doctor as to whether the pup is experiencing any infection or whether or not it can undergo anesthesia... It is one step that shouldn't be omitted.

Also, speak to the vet on what type of anesthesia is used, whether the pup is intubated.....if the pup is instrumentally monitored during the procedure...

OHH GEES, that intubation scares the hell out of me.
I think a lot of Yorkies are "vulnerable/suseptable" to
trachea problems ?

Sometimes I have heard on here of a yorkie having slight coughing problems after intubation so I believe it can irritate but Ive never heard of it causing collapsed trachea

My Harley is 6 mos old...and due to be neutered...but we are waitting to see if any baby teeth have to be removed...My Vet and I plan to kill 3 birds with one stone...neuter/remove baby teeth if any/and microchipping him.

I agree with the other posters, sounds like they just want you for all you're worth...look for a new vet for your pups sake. One surgery is enough stress for them, but two! back to back even, bleh!

It's needed to insure that the pup is being monitored properly. You aren't pressing on the trachea......it's not collapsing.

Same here. Josie was 11 months 4-lbs and Jack was 13 months and
5-1/2 lbs. Josie was in heat also when my vet did it. I haven't heard good things about the place you listed either.

That sounds so wrong, Please see my profile Andy was fixed and had 19 baby teeth extracted at the same time. I would deffinatly get a new vet.

Andy's vet said it was the best way to go even though he would be sore at both ends. I contacted a retired Vet I had previous years he also said do it at the same time.

But, Banfield was SO convenient, in Petsmart, and next door
to Home Depot !!! ARRRR

BUT, given what I've herd here, I'm OUT OF THERE !

This (next) Vet will be the third I've gone to here, and I don't
want to return to the first.

But I think you may have not understood...
An Intubation requires that a Tube be placed into
the Trachea/Airway. Therefore "expanding" it, which may
cause some prolapses (stretching), and that's what
scares me. It's done to mechanically respirate, not monitor.

Please excuse me if I have presumed with an excessive
explanation here. Some may not have known exactly.

Mardelin is right to contact LJ about a vet referral. LJ has an excellent vet. Dont worry about changing vets - I'm on my 4th and it took me 10 years to find one I love and trust. Good luck!

I fully understand what is entailed with intubation, I am a retired RN....however, if you have a qualified, proficient vet...they know what they are doing.....and weighing the pros and cons of life and death. I'd have it done and have had done with all my yorkies. I breed and none of my dogs have ever experienced trachea problems. If a yorkie is prone to trachea problems it is more because genetic issues or the type of leash that is being used...pressing on the trachea
