Vet refuses to do Spay AND Extractions
 
I had been putting off Spaying of my Becca, taking the advice of
comments on this and other Forums I watch. But, finally decided
to start the process and called Banfield here in Houston.

I WAS SHOCKED, when they told me they would not do a Spay, and
extract two of her baby teeth at the same time! Explaining that would
put too much stress on her.

I have read SO many times, where those two procedures should be
done simultaneously, to reduce the exposure to anesthesia, that
being the cause of so many "lingering" problems in our animals.

Has anyone here experienced this "point of view" from a Vet of theirs ?
And if so, did you take the Vet's advice ?

Becca is a healthy, active and well maintaned dog,
9.5 months old, and weighs 6.5 lbs.
There's nothing wrong with her in any way.

Short answer: Find a new vet.

Banfield is notorious for being a high profit center, and anesthesia is a high profit procedure. 2 procedures, two fees.

The biggest risk of surgery come from being anesthetized, so most vets want to reduce the number of times they have to do it.

I don't mean to upset you or insult you by saying this but Banfield is widely known for wanting to do unnecessary procedures, give unnecessary vaccinations, etc. in order to increase their profit (I'm not saying that all of them are this way, but many of them are). It doesn't surprise me that they're urging you into two separate procedures where you'll have to pay twice. Especially if you bought into their "insurance" plan and prepaid for the spay. :(

My vets have always strongly encouraged me to have the baby teeth extracted at the time of spay/neuter. There is always a risk any time anesthesia is used on people or pets. My advice is for you to check with a different vet.

I agree. I would get a second opinion from another vet. My vet was the one that suggested waiting to spay until she had her permanent teeth so that he could do the extractions of her retained baby teeth at the same time.

:confused: my poppy was spayed , chipped and had a tooth out ;) when she was 11months , best time to do it whilst they are asleep imo :) love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork

Banfield is terrible when you need it. Any other vet knows it is best to do it at the same time because any time you put an animal under there is risk so its better to do it once rather than twice. Do a search on here about banfield and youll see some inlightening threads on them. I think they just want to make the extra money for putting her under twice. Banfield is all about the money. Im sorry if that offends you that Im saying that but that is my opinion after reading so much about them and doing my own research

:eek: AGREED!! Anesthesia is so very risky for our little ones. Once is plenty ~ Most good vets will do both procedures at the same time. Twice under puts more stress on them. I would definitely look for another veterinarian!

But, as you say, it's logical to attempt to reduce the risk...
Why wouldn't they just tell me that it would cost
extra, not totally refuse to do it !!!?

Their explanation was "stress", not cost !

Sorry, I'm just exasperated, you don't know why they did that,
but YES, I think another Vet is in order here.

I agree with what others have said. Find a vet you can trust. Sophie's vet extracted her baby teeth at the time of her spay so she only had to be put under once and told me he would be extracting three teeth. He only charged me for one tooth and when I asked him about it he laughed and said the other two teeth practically fell out in his hand so he wasn't charging me for those. He could have charged me and I would never have been the wiser. Find a vet you can really trust to be honest with you. Down the road if your vet says your yorkie needs some procedure you'll never know for sure if it was all about the money or not.

Sorry to be so picky, but...
Blood Work ?, is that a "set" number of tests done, or
must I ask for specific test, or testS to be included ?

What I'm asking is, what exactly are we looking for
in the test ?

It is called wellness bloodwork or preop bloodwork. It lets you know the organs are in good condition to be put under aneshesia. This is very important because liver shunt is so prevalent in yorkies
