| Diarrhea after taking Benadryl... Ian started sneezing a lot because the pollen here is terrible. I gave him 1/2 teaspoon of Benadryl this morning...actually yesterday morning since it's after midnight, and he has had two big bouts of diarrhea. He also vomited (a small amount) about 20 minutes ago. He is acting fine, and after he had his last episode, he wanted to play. I gave him Benadryl because that is what the vet recommended for Prince during pollen season. Has anyone else's baby done this? My husband is going to take him to the vet when they open today.

| sorry he has been sick! 1/2 tsp seems like a lot to me. When my girls need the Benydril I usually give them bout .5 cc. 1/2 tsp is a little over 2.5 cc's i think. Maybe that was too much for his system. Hope he feels better soon!! |

| Thank you friends for following up. Ian went to the vet today with his daddy, and it was not because of the Benadryl. Ian apparently has a stomach virus, and was given metronidazole (250 mg) to help with that. He was given one tablet and has to take 1/4 per day. The vet also told us to change his dog kibble from Wellnes to Iams. Tonight and tomorrow he is supposed to have a few kibbles of Wellnes with 1/4 of boiled rice; then I have to start weaning him off of Wellness. I spoke with her (Ian's regular vet was out today) about my concerns about Iams, but she felt that it would be good for Ian. As usual, I plan to do my research here on yt...and the net. (Prince was 5.7 pounds when he was prescribed 1/2 teaspoon of benadryl; Ian is 9.3ish pounds, so I knew that it wasn't too much for him.)

| Metronidazole is an antibiotic, and like all antibiotics it will kill all bacteria in your pups system, regardless of it being good or bad. Which means that diarrhea and stomach upset will only continue because the GI tract will also have its bacterial flora destroyed as well; so while you are killing the bacteria that caused the stomach virus, you are also irritating the GI tract. You mentioned that you were adding in rice, I posted to your other thread, but you really might want to think about oatmeal, cooked of course, but it is great for stomach upset and helps to replenish the good bacterial flora in the GI tract, especially within the large intestine. It contains fruto-oligosaccharides which are prebiotics, and not only helps the flora flourish, but gives bulk and consistency to the feces. Best of luck, poor little thing... |

| Poor little guy. Have you thought about childrens Zyrtec? I heard alot of people have good luck with that for doggies. I would definitely never feed Iams. Out of all the "grocery store" brands, Iams is probably one of the last I would feed (besides maybe Kibbles n Bits or something).
