Metronidazole is an antibiotic, and like all antibiotics it will kill all bacteria in your pups system, regardless of it being good or bad. Which means that diarrhea and stomach upset will only continue because the GI tract will also have its bacterial flora destroyed as well; so while you are killing the bacteria that caused the stomach virus, you are also irritating the GI tract.
You mentioned that you were adding in rice, I posted to your other thread, but you really might want to think about oatmeal, cooked of course, but it is great for stomach upset and helps to replenish the good bacterial flora in the GI tract, especially within the large intestine. It contains fruto-oligosaccharides which are prebiotics, and not only helps the flora flourish, but gives bulk and consistency to the feces.
