| Food & Water 24/7? I am a new Yorkie owner and have been told different things regarding Yorkies and their food/water. The breeder told me that Yorkies should have access to food/water 24/7...but most of my friends who have dogs (even small dogs) think that's crazy and prevents me from getting her on a schedule. Any thoughts? Thanks! |

| Mine have food available to them 24/7...............but, when you are trying to housebreak them, scheduled feeding is much better - that way you know when they have to pee and poop. Mine are housebroken (well at least the one) so I have food for them out all the time. Yorkies (especially puppies) need to eat more often.

| I find scheduled feedings are the best for potty training & work the best if you're on the go & take your pup many places with you, as I do. I leave water down at all times, but I lucked out with this new pup and haven't had any difficulties with her peeing on her pads. What people do probably depends on many things, such as the age of the puppy/dog, size of the puppy/dog, and people's lifestyles (stay at home, work from home, work irregular hours, etc.). Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new yorkie

| Welcome & congrats your new yorkie I have fresh water out 24/7 Remy is 2 1/2 and eats on a schedule - 3 times per day. First thing in the AM as soon as we come in from AM potty; at noon; and around 6pm. We do not free feed, and never did. | Piper has water available 24/7 now, but as a puppy I would pull it as it got closer to night, normally about a half hour before bed. She is raw fed, so she gets that twice a day, so no food most of the time. |

| Water is essential for hydration, which keeps all of the vital organs functioning properly, especially the kidneys and liver. I would never withhold water. I have read here that it is a myth that withholding water aids potty training. Something about not stretching/exercising the bladder, and some other details I do not recall at the moment. Maybe Nancy1999 will explain it here. In my opinion, food depends on the dog. If you have a good eater and your pup isn't a tiny, I don't think it is necessary. Some pups are really good self-regulators, others will keep eating.

| Thanks everyone! I appreciate the feedback! I'm trying all kinds of things because I've had her for 4 nights and she has cried/screamed/barked all night, every night. Tonight I will be putting her in my room in a smaller crate (she has been in her playpen until now), and I was wondering if I should put food/water in there. Was thinking not, so maybe I'll try tonight and see how it goes. So much to learn with these little guys! She cries any time she's not with me. I have to keep reminding myself that she's only 9 weeks old. |

| One that young should still be with the mom till she's at least 12 weeks since she has so very much more to learn from the mom and she should also be getting food every three to four hours, and not just dry puppy kibble. Water should be available to her at all times. Are you at home all day to take care of this young puppy?

| I've always left water out for Sasha 24/7. She has been on a feeding schedule basically since she was a puppy. For a little while, I would leave food down for her until she finished it, but she was getting so picky with her food that I decided to go back to scheduled feedings and it's working out much better. |

| I've taken several days off work, so I've been with her almost 24/7 since Friday morning when I brought her home. I do go back to work tomorrow, but I'm lucky to have a job that's close to my apartment, so I can come home at lunch to check on her, etc. I also work from home one day a week and have every other Friday off. She will have to spend some time alone, but I'll be here as much as I can, especially in the early stages. I've heard conflicting reports about when pups can leave their mom, but I trusted my breeder when she said any time after 8 weeks is good. She's been doing it for 20+ years, and all of her pups are well adjusted. Dolce seems to be doing well with me so far! |
