| Quinn-1, Toothbrush-0 So I tried brushing my pup's teeth for the first time yesterday. Normally she is good about "putting up" with the grooming she doesn't like (baths, brushing, etc.) but she HATED the toothbrush! She freaked out so bad that I couldn't hold her still to even get the brush in her mouth. All I ended up with was a glob of toothpaste on her mouth. And I could tell she hated the taste (I think it was chicken flavor) which is shocking b/c she's Miss Piggy and will eat anything! Does anyone have any advice on brushing your baby's teeth, or is this something I'm going to have to leave to the groomer? |

| Jackson HATES it too! I guess they are a real match made in Heaven (for the V-Day "Ball"). It's something he's just gotten better at with age. I do it when he gets a bath once a week. It's easier for me to do it while he's in the sink and it's just part of his bath routine. I just pry his mouth open and brush as best as I can -- I'm not sure how great of a job I do. Then I rub some Petzlife gel over his teeth on both sides. He's over 2 now and has nearly perfect teeth, there's just some tartar on the top canine teeth that I am trying to get off.

| Have you tried a wet washcloth over your finger and rubbing it against the teeth? I do that, although I don't know if I'm doing a great job. It's better than nothing. Sammy freaked out with the toothbrush too. |

| I found that using a baby tooth brush(or childrens, same thing just labeled different, just get the smallest softest human brush you can find) worked better them the dog brush and that getting an orange flavored tooth paste(still pet tooth paste never use human) worked better then chicken or poultry.

| Thanks for the ideas. I did use a children's brush (the breeder gave it to me in a care package) but I will have to try the orange flavor. I thought she would let me brush her teeth just to get to whatever was on the toothbrush...boy was I wrong! And Britster--they must be a match! She's a little tomboy too...it's too bad they can't play together! |

| Have you tried wipes yet? I use dental wipes, my Cooper is about 3pounds he has a tiny mouth hated the toothbrush no matter how small it was. I like the wipes from truebluepets.com I also like the line of pet prducts from biotene. They make a gel water additive and maintenance gel. I have a dog that has the worst teeth ever, l brush 2 times a day. He also gets a sealer l put on weeky at home. |

| I can relate..... I have been brushing my Maltese's teeth for 9 years with great results. He's had 2 cleanings and, most recently, one hand-scraping where the vet reported little tartar in those 9 years. Now, Tank the Yorkshire Terror, is another matter. He turns 1 next week and I haven't started with him but after we get his patella fixed, he's in for it! I can't even imagine how that is going to go. He is VERY interested in Pico when I am brushing his teeth. I think he's attracted to the chicken toothpaste so tonight I may start just rubbing some on his teeth with my fingers. He's already accustomed to me running my fingers over his teeth. Partly because I am always looking for "what are you eating now?"!!!!! And pulling leaves, twigs, magnolia seeds, etc. out of his mouth. Cat poop is the worst! After pulling that out one time I am much more vigilant when he is in the back yard where the neighbor cats like to potty. (Oh, but they need to ROAM!) Right. But that's another issue. So we'll see how that goes. I have not put the water additive in because I don't understand how that works and with Pico's MVD (liver anomaly) I am careful about what my Maltese ingests. If anyone has any information about that I'd be interested. Wish me luck! |
