| Switching from Royal Canin and now from Orijen Puppy I switched Riley from Royal Canin to Orijen Puppy. He was doing fine with the Royal Canin and he really liked it but I was reading a lot about the no grains.... and the Royal Canin was more expensive. I'm not liking what I am seeing with the Orijen Puppy, for him. Ever since the switch, he is getting lots of eye boogies and he is looking a little greasy. He also doesn't seem to like it as much as he did the first week. Has anybody else had these results? I am thinking of switching him to Acana but am afraid that he will have the same kind of results since it is from the same company..... ?? I am also looking into Blue Buffalo. Has anybody tried that?? Thanks!! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I started Taycie off on Blue Buffalo when she came home. I have had wonderful results with it and it agrees with her stomach. After reading and doing my on research I decided I wanted to try Acana. I liked the company alot and there philosophy behind their food. Things were fine with her for the first week but as I slowly started replacing her old food with the new, she ended with with chronic diaherra. It got so bad one time we ended up in the vet because she had very mucousy poops. Everything was fine, she just had a severe stomach ache. She did offer suggest trying a prescription diet but I felt if I couldn't get things back to normal going back to BB then I felt I might consider it. I also have tried The Honest Kitchen, which was my personal favorite, but it ended up doing the same thing. It has very High amounts of flaxseed it it and as a result would clean her little system right out. Everyone here has there own preference and personal feelings on food. I found out that although what looks good on paper may not look good coming out of your baby.lol.. As a result she is back on the BB and is thriving!.. She does seem to do better with a lower protein food and does better with grains rather then without....So I am sticking with it! Because of her crazy stomach I do have to be so careful with the amount she eats and what kind of treats she gets. If she gets too many treats as a result we have loose poop. How much are you feeding on Orijen?... I know puppies/dogs that are on this they don't need much because it is a higher protein food. Good luck! I hope you find what works best for your baby, because in the end that is all that matters

| Thanks so much!! He eats about 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup each day. I put 1/4 cup down in the morning and then 1/4 cup down in the evening. I am going to finish this bag of Orijen Puppy... then will try something else. |

| Trixie came from the breeder with RC puppy food and we have had her on RC since. She eats well and her poops are firm. It is expensive and maybe not the "best" out there, but I'm not switching. Good luck...I have heard good things about BB.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | First I read here that RC was a great food, and then I read it was a horrible food. I tried switch, and many people recommended Blue Wilderness but it caused Joey to have some bad eye drainage, and boogers. The drainage got so bad after 4 days, I switched him back to RC. It took about 10 days to clear up completely but within 24 hours I could see a large improvement. I waited a month and tested again, and the same thing happened. So we went back to RC. I'm not sure grains are is bad, as some people believe. Dogs in the wild eat lots of different things, and have been eating what humans eat for thousands of years. I feed RC and occasionally suppliment it with a few green beans, and other veggies, lean meats, egg, fruits, and yogurt. I don't give processed food, or pork ever. The human foods are just a small part of his diet, less than a tablespoon. He's really doing well on this. I like this site as it dispels many of the myths of dog food, and what's the proper diet. It teaches you to rate a food yourself, and not rely on others to do it for you. The Dog Food Project - Myths about Dog Nutrition. The author has a solid background in Biology and Chemistry as well as nutrition. It says: Quote:

| My Coco can eat anything and its fine, but Beckham did not do well with the high fat and protein that Acana and Orijen have. They are now Nutrisca and it seems to agree with both of them.

| Thanks for that info., Nancy. I am now thinking of maybe switching him back to RC...He loved it....I could even use it as his treats while training. I tried to do the same with the Orijen Puppy and he won't even open his mouth for it. LOL - He gets bad eye boogers now.... I am thinking it is the high levels of protein and fat that aren't agreeing with him. |

| Also, if your puppy is around 7-8 months old - the eye boogers may be due to teething and not so much the food. If so, it eventually stops at around 10 months old (at least it did for me)

Thor's Human Donating Member | I think the link Nancy provided, The Dog Food Project - Myths about Dog Nutrition, is excellent. What she says about grains makes a lot of sense: basically, that dogs can benefit from grains, but they have to be ground, cooked, etc so the dog can digest them. If you compare a cat, a dog, a human, and a cow, you can see from the teeth and the digestive system a progression that is just for meat (lots of sharp teeth for ripping and shredding) to one designed just for plants (broad teeth, three stomachs).
