| Yorkie hates high quality dog food Hi All! I have a 5 year old male YT who is somewhere between 7-8 lbs. When I got him in April (from the pound) I tried to start him on Blue Buffalo Wilderness kibble, he would eat none of it. So I went with Royal Canin YT blend, which he likes and much to my shame I also got him hooked on Pet Botanics rolled dog food which he LOVES. I don't like some of the stuff in both types of food and want to put him on better food. I got 3 different trial bags of the Orijen and the trial size of Natures Variety chicken favored raw medallions. He will not go near either of the better types of food. But today he stole the entire log of Pet Botanics out of my shopping bag and carried it off. I free feed the Royal Canin and the Pet Botanics, and he seems to eat his fill and not over do it. My question (after that long wind-up) is, how can I get him to eat the better stuff? The raw needs to be thrown out after a half an hour sitting there, and if I leave Orijen out for him or mix it with the other stuff, he wont eat anything. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! |

| Remove the meat roll from your dog's diet completely and you will probably solve all of your problems. I couldn't find an analysis of Pet Botanics' ingredients, but I'm guessing it is similar to the Natural Balance meat rolls. These are not things that should be a major part of your pup's diet. I don't think it is a matter of your dog hating high quality food. He is hooked on the fatty rolls.

| Sometimes, you just have to go with what works. I would keep trying different things but the highest quality food won't do much good if your dog will not eat it. Maybe take out the rolled dog food first; he might be hungrier if he's not getting a lot of that.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Here is the ingredient list: Lamb & Rice Dog Food Roll Ingredients: Lamb Meat, Lamb Hearts, Lamb Kidneys, Lamb Lungs, Whole Wheat Flour, Brown Rice, Wheat Bran, Lamb Fat (naturally preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Ascorbic Acid, a source of Vitamin C), Sucrose, Flaxseed Meal, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Modified Food Starch, Sodium Phosphates, Water, Brewer's Yeast, Dried Kelp Meal, Lecithin, Natural Smoke Flavor, Sorbic Acid, Glycerin, Rosemary Extract, Canola Oil, Choline Chloride Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Riboflaven Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, D-Biotin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Potassium Iodide, D-Activated Animal Sterols (Source of Vitamin D3) Biotin, Sodium Nitrate (for color), Sodium Selenite. Savory Beef Dog Food Roll Ingredients: Beef Hearts, Beef Kidneys, Beef Lungs, Whole Wheat Flour, Brown Rice, Wheat Bran, Beef Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Sucrose, Flaxseed Meal, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Modified Food Starch, Sodium Phosphates, Water, Brewer's Yeast, Dried Kelp Meal, Lecithin, Natural Smoke Flavor, Sorbic Acid, Glycerin, Rosemary Extract, Canola Oil, Choline Chloride Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Riboflaven Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Vitamin A Acetate, Folic Acid Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, D-Biotin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Potassium Iodide, D-Activated Animal Sterols (Source of Vitamin D3) Biotin, Sodium Nitrate (for color), Sodium Selenite. Seems a little heavy on the fat, to me. These would probably be a better occasional treat than the mainstay of the diet.

| Same Problem Just quickly scanning the ingredients, I would be skeptical because of the sucrose too but also the whole wheat flour and the high fat. I have the exact same problem as you. When I got my dog at 18 mnths, as a rescue they gave her to me with a bag of Purina Puppy Chow. She was a real mess. Her eyes, teeth and hair. I cook for her and have ever since but free feed on kibble. I tried many different premium brands. Turns out she loves the Royal Canin. I don't want her to eat that anymore. I have tried the Orijen, Now, EVO and several others but she doesn't stick with them. Always goes back to the Royal Canin. Learning as I go along, as it is time consuming but fun, I still cook for her, she also has organic beef we raise, raw with her vegetables. In the meanwhile I am learning about digestive enzymes, calcium and other mineral supplements that I ought to be adding to her diet, since I cook for her. I came here tonight in hopes to see what others are feeding their Yorkie's. I know that I would like mine to live to the max of age as possible and know diet is going to have a lot to do with that! She does eat the EVO, sometimes but the protein content is quite high so concerned about her liver etc.. Such a learning curve. I now have three piles of dry food. One EVO, one Royal Canin and the other Now. She is going for the EVO still. Prefer over the R.C. but rather find something with a bit less protein content. Please let me know if you find something that your dog will eat that is of a higher quality food. Preferably without artificial preservatives, without anything wheat or corn. I will do the same and thank you in advance. Best to you. Quote:
