| Rash because of allergies? Pictures included. My mom was dog sitting for me this weekend while I was out of town, and when I returned, I noticed a rash on Howie's chest and inside his arms (armpit area). I thought he may be irritated by the grass that my parents have at their house, so a bathed him. However, it looks like the rash under his armpit is not going away, or getting any better. I wanted to wait a day or two before taking him to the vet since he doesn't seem to be in any pain or bothered by it (besides some licking here and there). I plan on calling the vet tomorrow if it doesn't look better, but.... wanted to ask if anyone has ever seen this or can tell if it maybe an allergic reaction to food? I changed him over to Wellness about 2 months ago. I have once noticed a little spotting on his chest, but they went away in a day or so. Any insight is appreciated! Thank you. |

| I was also wondering if it was that. He has gotten a hot spot on his arm before that looked similar to that, and it went away after a little while... |

| Looks like staph to me. Could be wrong, but I would definitely get a vet to look at it.

| I have just starting reading up on that.... I hope it isn't that, but yes...I know that if it doesn't get better, I'll have to take him in. Do you know how you would be able to tell if it's a staph? Would there be puss/leaking fluids/anything? Thanks so much! |

| Staph infections that our dog had were spots that were kind of crusty and seemed to ooze a little. If he does have a staph, he will prob need to go on antibiotics. We used the Simplecef with good results!

| Staph infections on dogs are VERY common, especially in those with allergies. Looks like there are two lesions, which to me would indicate the need for an antibiotic IF it is staph. If there is one, sometimes it will clear up with an antibiotic cream. They are often crusty with some discharge, but not always. I just know how they look as I have dealt with them many times. Really not a big deal!

| Thank you. It did feel wet when I got home tonight, but wasn't sure if it was from him licking it. |

Most Vet Derms will use Simplicef x 3-4 weeks when pyoderma is diagnosed. It usually clears it right up!

| Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! I had an appointment for Howie scheduled, but unfortunately, work got extremely busy, and I wasn't able to leave early as I had planned. However, when I got home, it wasn't as red, and a coworker told me she put some neosporin on her dog, and it may help. I did that, watching to make sure Howie wouldn't lick it!...and the next day, it was better!!! It scabbed up, and half of the "scabbed" part has fallen off already. I am still really curious as to what it was that caused the rash. If it were a staph like some of you thought it may be, would it have gone away just like that? |

| Ringo got a staph infection from his skin allergies; well, I guess from scratching so much and they get an infected place on the skin; then they scratch that . . . you get the picture. It looked like that - started out with one or two then ended up with more. He did require a round of antibiotics AND a prescription shampoo to clear up the skin infection. Now, we control his allergies better so he doesn't scratch to the point where he gets an infection. Good Luck.
