| Demodex and Promeris Hi all! Well, I've posted in the past about Guppy's ongoing battle with Demodex. We've spent the last year running back and forth to specialists and the University of Florida Small Animal Clinic looking for answers. I've consulted a canine nutritionist and we've tried everything we can think of nutritionally (enzymes, bovine colostrum, etc.). We've had great results with the daily Interceptor but the cost is high, so although I'm committed to paying it as that's the only thing that's worked in the past, I've been on the lookout for a new way to get around giving him a once a month drug daily. I can't imagine that the long term use would be good for him. I've used Skin So Soft as a rinse with good results but it's not consistent and the oil has gotten on all my furniture since it stays behind after rinsing. My vet called me a couple weeks ago and told me Promeris is now FDA approved as a treatment for demodex. It's a once a month spot on, with the active ingredient Amitraz. It's been almost 2 weeks since we started the treatment and already I'm seeing good results. I didn't see any of the lethargy sometimes associated the the application, but he did throw up a couple times the night we put it on. Still, as an alternative to a much more aggressive therapy which is oral (Interceptor) I think I feel better about its use. Anyone else battling this or using Promeris? I'd love any feedback. Thanks! |

| I am a foster parent for a Yorkie rescue and I have now had two babies with demodex (brother and sister). I ended up adopting the sister and my friend adopted the brother. Our vet treated them with daily doses of Ivermectin which is an ingredient in the Interceptor. The boy was treated with daily doses of the Ivermectin mixed with a vitamin for six months. The female was treated for 3 and both have had clear skin scrapes. He also had us bathe the dogs twice a week in SulfOxyDex shampoo and use Hylyt Bath Oil conditioning rinse. With this combination we have had huge success. Let me know if you would like any more specific information or even my vet's phone and name. I'm sure he would be happy to share his knowledge with others.

| I used Promeris on Penny for several months as her flea + tick treatment. She showed no ill signs from using it, but the smell! -- I just found it to be overpoweringly fragrant.

Bugsmomma, Guppy started on Ivermectin but after 6 months his scrapes still showed too many mites and that's when they switched him to Interceptor. I've been toying with a different vitamin supplement so I'd love to know which you are using...plus I'll look into the shampoo and bath oil you're using. U of F had me shampooing twice weekly with Benzoyl Plus which is a moisturizing shampoo with benzoyl peroxide, but I can't use that with the Promeris as it will wash it off. I am wondering about the oil though and will surely check that out. He's also on Simplicef which is an antibiotic. Glad to know someone else is using the Promeris as I'm always worried about new medications. | |

| Am just starting to use Promeris We have a small mixed dog we rescued about 6 months ago. We discovered that she has generalized demodex. We have already tried the dip, Mitaban, at first and it did not help. Before the dip she had patches of hair missing and after the dip treatment, a lot more hair fell out. On our doctor's recommendation we moved onto Milbemycin (Interceptor) which is very expensive. Since we don't know the exact breeds in our dog, we used this as oppose to Ivermectin, which can be dangerous to some breeds. This also had no good results. We are now on Promeris. We just bathed her and put it on about a week ago, June 28, 2009. Since we stopped the dip, her hair is pretty much grown back but the scrapings still say she has all stages of the mites in large numbers on her. We will keep our fingers crossed that Promeris works. I will leave follow-ups about our results |

| Promeris and demodex So, I posted something about a month ago in reference to promeris being used on our dog for generalized mites, specifically demodex. We had used every other known thing out there to kill them and some where VERY expensive treatments but nothing worked. Nothing even seemed to make a big difference. I am happy to say that I just got back from the vet and the scrapings show that there are no eggs, no immature mites, and no adult mites that are alive. They are all dead. The vet recommended that we stay using this promeris for another 6 weeks (every two weeks we wash her and reapply) then move to the regular once a month treatment. It has been a long fight with the mites but I am very relieved this worked! It does make her very drowsy for the first two days but that has been the only side effect we have seen. |

| About to start using Promeris - updates from anyone?? Hi all! I have a terrier mix of some sort who has generalized demodex and has been surviving with it for 13 years! I have tried everything...and when I say everything, I mean everything....this is truly the million dollar dog! I've done Mitaban Dips, I've done Ivermectin, I've done Interceptor, I've tried all sorts of shampoos.... Currently she is on Interceptor and periodic cycles of antibiotics and ketoconyzole for infection and yeast on her skin. She is older and has a heart murmer/enlarged left atrium as well and has just now been put on vaso-dialators to make things easier for her heart. That being said - the Demodex has always been such an issue for her and I just feel terrible when she gets itchy from it. I don't want to start a treatment though that might make things worse for her in any way shape or form. I know many of you started Promeris with good results and the FDA approved Promeris for Demodex treatment, however, there are tons of horror stories on the internet about Promeris and these horrible episodes of lethargy, vomiting, fainting, twitching legs, etc. How are things going for all of you who have posted prior to this???? Thank you for any advice!!! Chase |

| Since all dogs react differently, it may be worth a try if the vet is comfortable with it. I did talk to Ellie's vet about it when we thought she may have demodex. She told me she doesn't like it at all. Absolutely not impressed. NOt one good thing to say about it. She told me I did not want to ues it. Can't remember just why now. I think it was just the ineffectiveness rate. Could've been something to do wtih side effects too though. Vets have their own clinical experiences, so opinions are definitely all over the place!

| Skin Issue Hello, I am new to this site and wanted to ask anyone if they have experienced what I have just found on my 4 year old Yorkie "Rocco". I take him every 4 weeks to be groomed, bathed & the works. I have now found what looks like "cradle cap" that you would find on a baby's head. I feel bumps, scabs and when I look at it closely, it looks flaky and yellowish in color. I notice it in the middle of his back approximately 3 to 4 inches from his collar and then on the lower area of his back toward his "butt". I am going to make an appointment with my Vet, but before I do I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Thank you for your help and input! Sheryl |
