Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | annual vaccinations, which do you get? I'm not that knowledgeable with all the types of vaccinations, but is it typical to get the annual da2pl vaccination? I've read on some sites that certain vaccinations are not needed for household dogs, i'm wondering if there are other annual vaccinations that people get for their yorkies?

| As my pups are older, they will be having titers done. Rabies every 3 years per MD state law. I would not vaccinate for Lepto, ever. Too many small breed dogs have reactions to it. JMHO. I try to follow Dr Dodds' Vaccination Protocol.

| I have done alot of research on vaccinations and I was even told this by MY vet it is NOT necessary to give our furbabies the anual "booster" They are just like us humans all they need are their baby shots and they are done for life! That is how vet's make their money! I do the 3 year rabies and if I have puppies or kittens I give them their round of puppy/kitten shots 5 in 1 for puppies and 7 in 1 for kittens. If I have have an adult and not sure if they have had their shots I give them a 5 in 1 I don't trust the others especially in small breed dogs the lipto(I know that is incorrect spelling) will harm them! I have done foster and rescue for 4 years I have learned alot! I have saved kittens and puppies from "fading" I have had orphan animals. I do alot of research on everything for my babies! Also OT but did you know alot of pet foods have euthanized animals in it? Well it DOES! Sad but true. There was an article I read online about a year ago that explained it. Hope this helps and hope I didn't rant too much lol http://vonhapsburg.homestead.com/petfood.html http://www.naturalnews.com/012647.html

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Unless Lepto is endemic to your area, it's rarely worth getting bc of the risks of the vaccine itself. I believe in getting puppy vaccines, the 1 yr puppy booster - and then no vaccines after that except rabies, as required by law.

| Okay, This subject confuses me too, Bailey is 28 months and he had all his puppy booster and rabies vac last year, I just got a notice that he is due again for Booster Vaccination plus Rabies..so is this correct? Sorry I don't trust my vet. ( the only one within 8 hrs from me! ) Also Jesse is 28 months, I brought him home 2 months ago. He is not due rabies until 2012 but is due Parvo and Bordetello should I go ahead and get those shots for them?

While my plan is to follow Dr. Jean Dodds protocol (meaning Jackson will never get shots again except for rabies every 3yrs as required by law), I am not totally sure what I will do just because I do travel a lot with Jackson so I don't ever want him to be considered not UTD on shots. Either way, I feel safer with every 3yrs then every year. So, Bailey is 2 right?? The months thing confuses me!! LOL. If he had his DHPP and Rabies at 1 year old, he should NOT need them again for 3 more years but I don't know the legal requirements of rabies in Canada.

I stated Bailey's age incorrectly He is 18 months! His last shots were a year ago and that was a 5 Way and Rabies. I thought the rabies were every 3 years here too, I really have to check this out! I don't want them to have shots that are not a necessity! So you did not get a booster for Jackson a year after his last set of puppy shots?

My furkids Donating Member | The vet I used to bring the girls to used to do titers for me. I was financially forced to go back to my original vet , who by the way is just as good but further away and a little cheaper....He does not do titers but will go 3 yrs on shots....We have been doing alot of camping and we take the girls, so I decided to get the lyme shot....BAD MISTAKE!! it is a series of 2 shots. Lillie is my 5lber....she got it first...she had a horrible reaction to the shot...so I decided not to have her get the second one and canceled Sadies appt. If I had my way they wouldn't get rabies every 3 yrs either...I don't believe it's healthy for them....

8 weeks- DHHP ('breeder' did this) 12 weeks- DHHLP (he had reaction to 'L'-lepto, so never again he's getting that) 15 weeks - DHPP 5 months old - Rabies Then he turned one year old and got a booster of DHPP and then he got rabies a week after that. He will be 2 in a few days here and will *not* be getting anymore this year. He will not need rabies again until he's 4. His vet told me he will also need another booster of DHPP at that time but I don't know yet if I will be getting those or not. So basically my vet believes he needs DHPP every 3yrs. Rabies is required by law here every 3yrs so we WILL be doing that.

Pretty much what we do around here now (I'm not totally opposed to an extra booster about three years after the first though just b/c I'm overly cautious). Ellie's vet told me that a few of her clients with older dogs have just decided to stop vaccinating...and she isn't sure that's a bad thing. Above all, find a vet that shares your views or can be an uphill battle. And getting modified live vaccines yearly (parvo, distemper, hepatitis) is not a good idea.
