| New food! Need help :) Hey everyone! I'm Juliana, don't post much, but I'm trying to participate more. But I'm no pro So here is the deal. I've been feeding Wellness for small breeds for almost 1 year. I used to give her toppings or mix dry and wet, but it became so complicated that I stopped (she would lick the toppings and spit the kibble). Then I got rid of the wet food (I read somewhere dogs need to chew their food to work their jaws) and eventually she started eating dry only. DH never thought she liked the food (Dry Wellness for small breeds) he think she eats because she has to. I kind of agree, and started noting more lately. Like she will eat, but is not that she likes it, hard to explain. In addition I give her chopped red bell peppers, sweet potatoes, bananas and blueberries at least 3 times per week. Now, after reading ya'll experiences, I decided is time to change her food. I also decided to go raw. So we went to the store yesterday and got Prime chicken and beef plus a small package of Orijen because I don't wanna feed Wellness anymore but I need for her to continue eating some dry due to travel needs since I can't have raw everywhere we go, be it a road trip or traveling overseas. Sorry this is long!!! So last night for her second meal I gave her two Prime nuggets, and she ate them in two seconds. Here are my concerns: 1. Prime package indicates that initially I should mix the dry and raw together and gradually give her a meal of raw only. But she ate it all and I could see she loved it, can I just give her raw only without mixing it with the dry for one meal? 2. Will it work feeding dry in the morning and raw in the evening? 3. In case the morning/dry and evening/raw doesn't work, is it gonna be bad for her to be on raw only and not stimulate her jaw by chewing? She has lots of chewing stuff and treats. 4. If I do raw only, would I be able to feed her canned wet when we travel? Sorry for having so many questions, I'm trying to figure out what to do... Thank you so much!! All opinions and comments are welcome! |

| I just started feeding raw for breakfast and kibble for the rest of the day. I've never heard of the jaw stimulating thing, though. I know there are tons of people on here that feed only raw and I don't think they have a problem with their jaws. We are going on vacation next month and have to board the pups so I'm just leaving them with kibble. I don't know about switching to canned while traveling. I have heard that some who feed raw get freeze-dried raw for traveling. That might be an option for you? The reason the bag says to mix the raw and kibble at first is to avoid stomach upset. You can go 100 percent if you want - just watch for runny poops at first. I didn't really do a transition with mine - I just gave 1/2 a patty one morning and had to troubles. Don't worry about all the questions. This is the right place for them! Especially when going to raw - there are really good resources on here. Hopefully someone with more experience can respond, too. I only started feeding a raw breakfast last week. Good luck! Last edited by rachelanne820; 09-27-2010 at 07:36 AM. Reason: fix percent sign |

| We used to feed the frozen raw morning and night. His teeth seemed to do really well. His coat was better, everything better. Since we started traveling, we went to origin kibble in morning and stella and chewys freeze dried raw in evenings. Again, nice coat, etc. We did try canned when we first started traveling but it was a pain to hang on to leftovers and his poo was not as hard and he got more eye gunk. Oh, also when we first switched from kibble to all raw, we didn't mix or anything. We just switched right away to all raw and his stomach was fine. |

| raw is actually better for the teeth and for overall health. since kibbles and raw digest at different rates they should be fed apart. i feed mine aunt jeni's homemade raw food and she's doing great. good luck

| Thank you so much for sharing guys! That helps a lot! I fed her 2 raw meals so far and I also did not mix raw and dry. I'm feeding a dry mix of Wellness and Orijen in the morning until my Wellness is over and I will keep the dry with Orijen. For dinner I'm doing raw only, I'm giving her Prime. I think she is doing good, during last night she had a little refluxe, she was coughing I got up and looked to see if she was OK, she seemed OK we went back to bed, but this morning I found a little yellow spot in the living room. Looks like biles, it was not the food. Can it be related to this new diet? She has had that before even on her usual diet, like maybe twice a month? Is that something I should worry about? Also, I don't know if is that she really loves the raw food, but she seems to be starving!!! I give her 1 1/2 nuggets, she finishes in 2 seconds and look at me with those big begging eyes for more... I wanted to give more but I'm afraid she will get fat... Someone also told me that wet is better than kibble, but I do agree that traveling with wet food is messy. So I may try the freezed dry raw, will pick it up next weekend because we are going to visit our family in Europe for Thankskiving and I need to be ready if this work than I can get rid of the dry food. Also, how old does a pup needs to be to be fed raw? My youngest furbaby girl will be home on 10/23/10 and I'm not sure what to feed her. Jeez! I should have had a skin baby, I think they are easier to feed. LOL Thank you so much for all your replies!! Last edited by MellyBelly Mom; 09-27-2010 at 08:45 AM. |

so its best to feed raw in the morning; u can give her a nugget for lunch and then dry at night that way her stomach doesn't empty faster and she won't vomit bile. i feed mine three times daily; that way it's easier for her stomach. i read somewhere that dogs 6 months and over can eat raw. check out aunt jeni's homemade food; u can cook it and feed it as a balanced meal. i add oatmeal to it. email jeni she's a nutritionist that created this food; ask her about the food being fed to a puppy. good luck.

| I always heard they can begin raw as soon as they can eat normal food. BUT, I have never had a pup that little so I don't know for sure. |

| Some puppies are weaned on to raw so there shouldn't be any problem feeding your new baby raw. Also, out of curiosity - you are feeding Primal raw, right? Just because I've never heard of Prime raw and was a little confused.
