| Questions about first heat. Hi Everyone, Holly is 9 months old and was scheduled to get spayed today, but because of her bad skin allergies the vet wanted us to see a dermatologist first, so off to the derm we go today. Unfortunately, Holly started to go in heat on Sunday. All last week she was vomiting about every other day and we couldn't figure out why. Is it possible her body thought she was pregnant since she went into heat on Sunday? The vomiting has stopped, but all she's been doing since Sunday is hiding in her crate and sleeping. Her belly is a little bloated too, and sometimes she'll whine a little bit. Is there something I can do to make her feel comfortable? How long will she be in heat? If the derm gives us a go, then she can get spayed on Thursday. Her skin is so flakey and red and raw that she'll bleed in a heartbeat (we keep shirts on her 24/7 for this reason), so we want to make sure it is safe for her to go under. We have tried everything for her skin: DERMagic, Nutiva Raw Coconut Oil, cod liver oil, Temaril-P, food elimination diet with Blue Buffalo Duck and Sweet Potato, then another elimination diet with California Natural Lamb and Rice (she did well with this for a few weeks, but then started scratching away again), and we only give her a bath once a week with Earthbath hypoallergenic shampoo. Hopefully the derm can help us find a solution so she can get spayed, because I feel so bad that she is uncomfortable

| Thank you! It turns out that all this scratching is from mites, so we got a whole load of meds for her. Hopefully she will get some relief soon!

| She had mites? Didn't your regular vet ever do a test for this or am I missing something? Poor girl. Glad you got her to a derm for some help. Hope she gets better soon.

No the vet never checked! I actually had the vet look into her ears 2 weeks ago and she said they were clean, but a little crusty so she cleaned them out. When the derm looked into her ears yesterday though he pulled out some dark brown/black ear wax, so I was confused because we've been dealing with this scratching since May/June, and I would think that the wax would have been a symptom that should have popped up by now because he said that was common.

From your post above saying that you have been dealing with red itchy flaky skin only getting worse and worse over time, and the dermatologist saying she has mites, sounds like mange. Treatment for mange can be spread out over some time, and can be stressful to their little systems so if that is what you are dealing with, I would definitely wait to proceed with her spay until you have her skin problem under control as the surgery will only put her under more stress. But, I see her surgery was scheduled for today. Poor girl, I would think her skin problems are what's causing her to not feel good.
