| left the vet quite confused So I had some seemingly solid information after researching all possible health issues in puppies (vomiting, diarrhea, kennel cough .... ect) so I felt pretty confident when my mom called me last Sunday to tell me Kasha's #2 wasn't her usual rock(she's raw fed). I thought it was just her being separated from her mom & dad(we were away for the weekend) but told my mom to make her some chicken & rice, watch her water intake as well as feed her some organic pumpkin to be safe. She got progressively mushier & intermittent mucus over the week but was eating & drinking more than normal. So Thursday we took to her to the vet. Unfortunately it's an animal hospital so unless you specify the vet you like ... you get who ever is free. DBF forgot to ask for the vet who I really like. The vet we got told me pumpkin was a laxative & blamed her diarrhea on that w/o any further testing. He put her on Tylan and Endosorb to help her get back to normal. While she is no longer leaving puddles of #2 ... they have form now. She's still pretty mushy. No other symptoms & all. Here's my question(s). 1) What does everyone here use pumpkin for? 2) Anyone who's had a little one on these meds before ... how long till everythings back to normal? Thanks!!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I have read here that pumpkin will either stop diarrhea or add fiber to a diet for constipation and always wondered how one food has the ability to control both conditions? I have used pumpkin for the added fiber before but not for diarrhea, I have medication for diarrhea that I prefer to use. I would think after a few days on the meds your vet prescribed, Kasha should be back to normal.

| Did the vet even do a fecal sample to test for parasites? Stress can easily trigger dormant giardia and if this is the case, the prescribed meds will not clear it up. Mucous in the feces can be the first sign of giardia. Pumpkin is used for both diarrhea and constipation. Based on posts about it, I would think more use it for diarrhea with good success. Tylan is generally used for gastric upset and is a regular staple for many of those who have IBD issues. With many diagnoses, you will see dramatic improvement within 24 hours. However, with severe gastric issues such as IBD or pancreatitis, it can take a long time with reocurring bouts inbetween. And with something like Giardia, you can see improvement, but they can relapse quickly and need several rounds of treatment.

| Exactly what I read about Pumpkin so I'm glad I wasn't being a bad mommy. He did no tests on her whatsoever. He heard pumpkin & presumed that was the cause. I know that mucous is a sign of Giardia, but she's had several fecal floats since we have had her and they have all been negative. She mostly potties on paper & drinks filtered H2O so I think maybe one of the other parasites if anything. She has no blood nor is she vomiting. After she flew for the 2nd time she had mucus in her stool... so perhaps it is simply stress related. IDK. I haven't seen dramatic improvement at all. She's better but not solid. Never again will I bring her to just anyone in the practice. Monday the vet I like is there... so I guess wait and see.

| Personally, I had always heard of pumpkin being a laxative for dogs. Even in some of the doggy treat cookbooks I have it warns against overdoing it with the pumpkin treats as they may cause very soft stool. That's just what I've heard. It wouldn't have hurt for the vet to run a few tests just to make sure everything was ok with your baby anyway. Desiree & Eros |

| I know people here always say pumpkin but I've never had it work for diarrhea. However I use peeled cored and sliced apple and it always works for mine. Maybe it just depends on what is causing the diarrhea. Pepto and kaopectate both have apple pectin it them and it deff helps with diarrhea or constipation. |

| I use yogurt when Harley is a bit mushy, and it seems to harden up the #2s either plain or vanilla, low fat when possible. I've never used pumpkin. But I've heard mixed reviews on the yogurt too... some people say laxitive, some people say it eliminates diarrhea.

| Just a note - giardia is sometimes very hard to detect. You may have to go through a few negatives before the positive shows up. I would do a fecal exam again. |
