| What do you do when they are so picky they barely eat? My baby Iggy that I adopted this week is the pickiest dog I've ever delt with. He is so skinny and not because his previous owner didn't feed him. The only thing I have been able to get him to eat without any trouble were french fries (hardly any good for either of us). I was given half a bag of the dog food he was being fed (Beniful, which he hates) and I've been mixing it in with the solid gold that my other dog loves. He barely touches it. Tonight I tried cooking for him and he ate a little bit of it but only if I was feeding it to him out of my hand. What is going on here? |

| Oh dear this does not sound good to me..... at first I thought it might have been being in a new home, but you said he is underweight. I have seen this in a friends yorkie and one day she got real sick and was taken to the ER and they found she had MVD a type of liver shunt. The only way to find out for sure is have a bile acid test (blood work). My friends yorkie would have bad days when she would not eat much for a day and would sleep most of the day, then the next day she was active again and eating better but she was always very thin and very picky eater. Did you get the name and # of his old vet?...if you did call them and see what he has been treated for in the pass and most recent. I could be wrong, but I would taken him to my vet anyway being he is new to my home and will be around my other dogs. Mention the bad picky eating habit and you might also want to take a stool sample to also rule out parasites. Keep us posted on how he is doing

| I agree - please have the vet rule out any health issues first. For us, Bailey is healthy but was very picky until she was about 8 mos. Our answer was homemade raw (lean hamburger, rice, cottage cheese, eggs, etc.). She is now 3 years old and loves, loves, loves meal time. There's lots of info on this site regarding picky eaters - take a look and good luck!

| Picky eater My Ally (3 lbs, 2 oz; 1.5 years) is a picky eater also. She is healthy though. I just make sure she eats and try not to distract her when she finally decides to eat. (I keep a close eye on her.) She has never been good with food...it's like trying to get a teenager to clean his room! ha ha I've tried everything; she just eats when she wants. She is on dog food and my 6 month old is on puppy food. I let Ally eat whichever one she wants, just to get her to eat. My new baby, Tia, is the opposite. She is a pig. It's difficult trying to get one to eat and trying to control the other. |

| I'd investigate further why your baby is a picky eater. I thought one of my IGs was a picky eater and I was cooking for her, hand feeding her and trying every kind of dog food I could, even cheap foods to get her to eat. My vet did routine bloodwork, but it was fine and she told me to give Gracie pepcid ac. I finally got so worried about how thin she was getting that I took her to an internist. Long story short, she has IBD caused by food allergies. Her intestines were so inflamed, the vet couldn't get the the scope (endoscopy was done) very far past her stomach. He did get lots of biopsies though. Now she is on a special diet, eats EVERYDAY (sometimes she would go up to 2 days without eating) and has gained her weight back. It's such a relief!

| I agree that you should go to the vet to rule out any possibilities first. Consider the food. I would switch to a grain free/wheat free product, my dog was really picky, and as soon as I had him fully switched he started eating (and he is only a 3lb dog) he is not heavy but he is a hyper puppy, thus he is the perfect weight for his temperment. I predict he will gain weight in the next year or so, when he settles down a bit. Personally I feed NOW! I am satisfied with it, and love it. My breeder feeds Natural Balance, which is also very similar and a wonderful brand. Good luck! |

| So, I went to the two different pet stores and bought a variety of different things. Here's what I found out. At one pet store they had tiny bags of premium kibbles as samples so I got one of each of those. Iggy will eat a new one on the first day but the second day he wont be into it. At the other pet store I bought (after reading every label) 6 different kinds of canned food. I think after day five of feeding Natural Balance Irish Stew and Chinese Take-out that we have a winning brand. He likes them so much he will eat them cold out of the fridge. I also tried cooking for him but that didn't work as well. This morning after our walk he sprinted into the kitchen and rand circles around his food bowl until I filled it with his Irish Stew. I also keep another bowl with the small dog solid gold kibble in it and I notice that he's eating little bits of that. He's three pounds so he really doesn't need to eat a ton but he's high energy and I really didn't like being able to feel every bone in his body. I can all ready feel his ribs less. Thanks everyone for your help! |
