Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ![]() i guess if you were looking for a generic it would just be labeled Diphenhydramine HCl. that is the active ingredient in Benadryl

| ![]() I gave her 1.75 mL today to see how she would react with the dose and it didn't not make her sleepy. She's not running around hyper, so I guess it just doesn't have an effect on her. I'm scared to give her 3 mL. I have to take her in to her doctor in a week, so I'll double check with him on the dosage and let him know that the 1.75 mL didn't have an effect to see what he recommends. Would lavender oil or something like that work?

| ![]() I just got off the phone with her U.S. vet and was told the 3-4 mL was okay for her. If not, that I should buy the 25mg adult tablets and give her a little less than a 1/4 of the tablet.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ![]() i believe she is using 2mg/kg of diphenhydramine instead of 1mg/kg. the usual recommended dose is 1-2 mg/kg so she is using the higher end. its up to you if you want to up the dose a little to see what happens.

| ![]() At 2mg/lb and 4 pounds, that would be somewhere between 3-4ml (didn't figure it exactly). So 4 is a slight overdose when looking at the standard dose. Just fine if the vet said to do it... I'm just not sure giving that much Benadryl to try and calm a pup down is a good way to go. If it actually works, great, but I honestly don't see it happening.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | ![]() yeah lol. i was looking at my info on diphenhydramine and its dosed at 2.2mg/kg so i guess i had that on my brain while typing. medically we usually deal with mg and kg, not lbs. we give doses for some meds in pounds because its easier for owners to understand. so in my head i'm doing the calculations my way and then trying to type it here the other way. 1-2mg/lb is the dosing range. and i think the vet was using the upper range of the dose to get 3-4ml. 3.4ml is the dose for a 4.3lb dog done at 2mg/lb i believe

It kinda irritates me that it is done in pounds. It just confuses things when almost everything else is done in kg.

| ![]() I've always given baby benedryal and I always give 1cc per pound but actually 1 cc less than their actual weight because of fear of overdosing. I always have a syringe in cc's. For flying I'd give rescue remedy instead of benedryal myself but as always...ask your vet that you trust for the correct dosage. This is what I do for "my" dogs and I always say ask the vet you trust first and don't do what I do. This is just what I do for my dogs. But I'd try the rescue remedy as it's natural for calming the nerves. Donna |

| ![]() Hello everyone. Thank you for the replies. I think her vet was doing the 2mg/Kg. Since I'm in Mexico, everything is in kilograms. ![]() I was thinking of trying the 3ml and see if that works. It scares me, but the lower dose didn't calm her down. I don't really want to try giving her anything stronger. On the flight she doesn't bark or anything. She just pants the entire time once they start pressurizing the cabin. I wanted to just take the edge off of her stress. I'm going to try next week to give her maybe 2.5ml and see if that does anything. But first I'm going to find her vet's new office. They just moved yesterday to a new place. I have the address but I want to make sure I know where it is in case something goes wrong and I need to rush her to the vet. Thank you everyone for your help.

| ![]() Hmm, isn't the high dose between 3-4ml? If yes, then don't be too nervous to go to three. It should be just fine if you have exceeded 2mg/lb.
