I take generics. Can't say I'd do the same in your case though.
The only children's liquid that we can find here is flavored.
Hmm, maybe ours was dye free. We need a new bottle and I'll have to investigate.

The vet did the calculations and was the one who told me 3 mL. I would never give her anything that wasn't prescribed by a vet first. I just like to verify the information I receive, just in case. You never know. I got yelled at before by another vet because I gave my puppy a small amount of a pain med for her leg. He was not her regular vet but the night vet that does her certificates of travel. He said that I better not have given her Naproxen because it's toxic to dogs and that many people give it to their dogs, etc. etc. I told him that I would never give my baby anything without first checking with her regular vet. Sheesh!!! It was like her was preaching to the converted (I don't know if I used that saying right).

Most definitely not. I don't think they even have a generic for Benadryl over here anyway. I didn't honestly look around because most, if not all, the medications you have to ask for them. And you can't really ask the pharmacists for help because most aren't pharmacists, just regular people.

i guess if you were looking for a generic it would just be labeled Diphenhydramine HCl. that is the active ingredient in Benadryl

It's so hard to look for mess when they're behind the counter. but I didn't even ask for the generic either to see if they had it. The brand name was really cheap. It was like $5 over here. Medication is so inexpensive over here. At least most of the ones that are used the most.

I gave her 1.75 mL today to see how she would react with the dose and it didn't not make her sleepy. She's not running around hyper, so I guess it just doesn't have an effect on her. I'm scared to give her 3 mL. I have to take her in to her doctor in a week, so I'll double check with him on the dosage and let him know that the 1.75 mL didn't have an effect to see what he recommends.

Would lavender oil or something like that work?

I just got off the phone with her U.S. vet and was told the 3-4 mL was okay for her. If not, that I should buy the 25mg adult tablets and give her a little less than a 1/4 of the tablet.

i believe she is using 2mg/kg of diphenhydramine instead of 1mg/kg. the usual recommended dose is 1-2 mg/kg so she is using the higher end. its up to you if you want to up the dose a little to see what happens.

You mean 2mg/lb?

At 2mg/lb and 4 pounds, that would be somewhere between 3-4ml (didn't figure it exactly). So 4 is a slight overdose when looking at the standard dose. Just fine if the vet said to do it...

I'm just not sure giving that much Benadryl to try and calm a pup down is a good way to go. If it actually works, great, but I honestly don't see it happening.

yeah lol. i was looking at my info on diphenhydramine and its dosed at 2.2mg/kg so i guess i had that on my brain while typing. medically we usually deal with mg and kg, not lbs. we give doses for some meds in pounds because its easier for owners to understand. so in my head i'm doing the calculations my way and then trying to type it here the other way.

1-2mg/lb is the dosing range. and i think the vet was using the upper range of the dose to get 3-4ml. 3.4ml is the dose for a 4.3lb dog done at 2mg/lb i believe

lol, I figured it was a mistype b/c you did it in pounds the other day.
It kinda irritates me that it is done in pounds. It just confuses things when almost everything else is done in kg.

I've always given baby benedryal and I always give 1cc per pound but actually 1 cc less than their actual weight because of fear of overdosing. I always have a syringe in cc's. For flying I'd give rescue remedy instead of benedryal myself but as always...ask your vet that you trust for the correct dosage. This is what I do for "my" dogs and I always say ask the vet you trust first and don't do what I do. This is just what I do for my dogs. But I'd try the rescue remedy as it's natural for calming the nerves.

Hello everyone. Thank you for the replies. I think her vet was doing the 2mg/Kg. Since I'm in Mexico, everything is in kilograms. I tried looking for the tablet form so that I could be sure to give her the 1mg/lb dose, but I couldn't find the tablets anywhere. I tried two of the large chain pharmacies and they only have liquid Benadryl. I even tried the Walmart pharmacy and it was the same thing. I have no idea why they don't carry the tablet form.

I was thinking of trying the 3ml and see if that works. It scares me, but the lower dose didn't calm her down. I don't really want to try giving her anything stronger. On the flight she doesn't bark or anything. She just pants the entire time once they start pressurizing the cabin. I wanted to just take the edge off of her stress. I'm going to try next week to give her maybe 2.5ml and see if that does anything. But first I'm going to find her vet's new office. They just moved yesterday to a new place. I have the address but I want to make sure I know where it is in case something goes wrong and I need to rush her to the vet.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Hmm, isn't the high dose between 3-4ml? If yes, then don't be too nervous to go to three. It should be just fine if you have exceeded 2mg/lb.
