| Heart worm medication Hi, I have my little girl home now. She is wonderful. Sleeps all night without making a peep in her bed and uses her pee pad when I'm not here or goes outside when I'm home. Have a question on the heart worm medication. Some sites say to wait till they are 6 months old but the vet said to give it to her now. She is very little. Weight only 1 lb. 10 oz. The advantix treatment I gave her made her retch for a few days and not very hungry so I wasn't impressed with that and he only gave her a partial dose of the pack labeled for dogs 1-10 lbs. I'm worried about this heart worm pill as the pack says for dogs up to 25 lbs. Anyone have any experience with dosing a light weight yorkie? Tx

| What did the vet give, Heartgard? The new recommendation is something like three or four months. It should be fine, but no guarantees for any dog. A lot of Yorkies do quite well on Interceptor. That would be my choice.

| Sophie is 5lbs and we give her Heartguard. I break it up in three pieces and give the little pieces to her one at a time over a couple minutes and she acts like she's getting a treat so she's fine with it. I also use the advantix and we have had no adverse reactions to either of these products

| My baby is 10 weeks and weighed in yesterday at the vet at 1.7 pounds. The vet told me to wait 2 more weeks to give him the heart worm medication because ideally he should be at least 2 pounds before receiving it. Hope that helps! |

| We use Interceptor. I like that is is broken into weight limits 1-10, 11-20, etc. That way my girls aren't getting the same dose as a 25 pound dog. Last edited by MaddiesMommie; 06-10-2010 at 07:46 AM. |

| Actually, you can't give Interceptor yet, so if your vet wants you to start now, Heartgard would be an okay option.

| I didn't give heart guard to any of my dogs bc it made my golden retriever sick. I waited until Pixie was old enough for interceptor. None of my dogs have had a reaction to this. If your lil one isn't going to be outside much I think I would wait until it is older. >>>just my opinion

| Heartgard soft chews have the ivermectin injected into them unevenly. One month pup could get the whole dose and the next month, none.

| Thanks everyone. All very helpful. I think I will at least wait until she is at least two pounds. The frontline heartgard is what came in her puppy kit but I was worried that it said up to 25 lbs. It just seems that she shouldn't take a dose that large when she doesn't even weigh 2 lbs yet. She goes for her 2nd puppy shots next week so I can wait and see what she weighs then. She is inside most of the time except to potty at this point. Didn't want to take any chances until her next set of puppy shots.

| I give both of my puppies Sentinel. Neither has had any adverse reactions. My Pomeranian is 6 months old, weighs about 8 lbs. My Yorkie is 17 weeks old and weighs about 2 lbs. 8 oz. Heartworm meds have really come a long way from what they used to be when I had dogs years ago. The heartworm pills were like a thick wafer, about the size of a quarter.... even for small dogs. I remember having to crumble it up in their food. I love the Sentinel pill. Very small and easy for me to put into the back of their mouths. Neither of my puppies object either or give me a "fight" when I give them their heartworm meds each month. When I visited our vet this week, with our yorkie "Princess", he gave me a sample of another brand of heartworm med. At the moment I don't recall what it is. I feel if a dog it outside at all, they really need to be on heartworm meds. I agree, all it takes is one mosquito bite and they can get heartworms. |

I would hope that he is not that incompetent!!! But, if what you say is true (which I don't doubt), I guess he is. Do you mind telling me where you learned this info? | |

| I didn't start heartworm meds, 'till mine were 6 months old...First, to get some weight on them, and Second, because even if they had been biten by an infected mosquito, it wouldln't be mature, anyway...I don't use ANY meds, except heartworm, but I'm down here in S.E.Texas, and you just can't take any chances...Our mosquitoes are the biggest on the planet (just like everything in Texas ) |
