Getting puppy to eat and drink . . . We finally brought our boy home today and are so in love! His name is Niko and he was born Jan 2nd 2010. He got car sick several times on the long ride home (3 hours) vomiting clear liquid with a small amount of yellow. Once we got him home he ate a very small portion of his dinner and drank a small amount of water but has not really had any further interest. The breeder said he ate "a little" earlier today but would need dinner tonight (1/3 cup royal kanin #33 with some wet puppy food-his usual meal), so I provided it but he didn't eat much. I tried to give him some nutrical, which he licked a bit but has no real interest. I added it to his food, along with some cheese and chicken. I haven't seen him urinate yet, but he's not really drinking much at all so it's not that surprising. This is our first yorkie so I'm really not sure how to make him eat or drink, the food and water are out for him. I don't know when I should get worried either. We're planning to go to bed soon and I wish he'd eat and drink more before we do. We'll keep him in an ex pen tonight with his food and water, along with a stuffed puppy that has heat and a heartbeat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome, to YT. I wouldn't worry yet about not eating. His tummy may be upset from the ride. Just offer the food, he may only eat a little at a time until he feels better. He has had some big changes today, that can throw him off, just keep an eye on him tomorrow. If you still have a problem, then I would check with the vet.

Thanks for the quick response, that makes me feel better! He seems to be acting fine, cautiously exploring the kitchen and being very affectionate. I'll definitely see how tomorrow goes. Thanks for the welcome!

| congrats on the new little one! I would say that your baby probably still doesn't feel well, and is probably quite stressed because of the new environment and people he's around (boy, right? Sorry, I can't remember). I would offer small amounts of food often, and keep water available at all times. As he warms up to everything, he should eat normally again. If not, I would consider a vet visit, and definitely keep the nutrical on hand at all times for now! Good luck and congrats again!

I'm happy to report that Niko had a good night, he slept well and had mostly finished his bowl of food this morning when we got up. He's happy hanging out on my lap now, we'll see how the eating goes today, but he does seem to be adjusting well!

Niko is on his way! It's a big new world for him and he's got to take little steps. Don't worry, just keep water handy and that nurtrical. Our Bella is 19 months, 3 lbs. and still only eats about 1/4 to 1/8 cup of kibble per day. She's happy and healthy. Congratulations on your new furbaby. What fun you have in store.

When we first got Charlie, he wasn't eating really. When I brought him to the vet, the vet said not to worry that when he gets hungry enough he'll eat. But of course I still worried. I'd put some food in my hand (beside the dog food bowl) and he would eat from my hand. After he would eat a few bites from my hand, then he'd eat from the bowl. I think he was just a little nervous. He's still not a big eater. And I'm probably ruining him because I add something to his food at every meal (not a lot but enough to make him want to eat.) Congratulations on your new family member. I'm sure you'll end up having lots of fun.

Welcome to Yorkie Talk! And congratulations on your new yorkie baby. I am a new Yorkie Mommy also. I had the very same problem with my yorkie baby for several days also. I found she would eat from my hand and drink from her water bowl if I held it, for the first few days. I also give her NutriCal each day to suppliment to make sure she is getting enough nutrients. We have had "Princess" for a month and she now eats and drinks on her own. Enjoy your new "baby". Yorkies are such sweet companions.
