What i do is hold a piece of chicken in my hand and they nibble at it and as they are nibbling the groomer is getting the nails so they are so distracted by chicken as they are chicken obsessed that the nails do not phase them. You could use a bully stick if they like those as well. It has worked really well for us. Also a groomer on my other group puts dogs in the puppy purse where all 4 legs hang out and it velcros around them and then you can hang dog on door knob etc as they will not move and she trims some this way that are difficult as they are so distracted by hanging they do not move and you can hang them on your arm and let groomer or vet trim nails I always hold them and help groomer groom them and it has been much less stressful since doing the chicken distraction - i hold it tightly in hand and they are trying to get at the whole piece and so determined they forget about the rest. here is what a puppy purse is http://www.puppypurse.com/ Last edited by dwerten; 05-14-2010 at 01:59 AM.

| I have a question.... do you think Rescue Remedy would work in this situation.... As most of you know, Jackson is a pretty well trained dog 99% of the time. He knows over 30 tricks, he listens to me pretty well and is fairly obedient. I can bring him to anyone's home and know he will be okay and well behaved (for the most part! ) we've slept at peoples homes before, one who had 2 other dogs, we've slept at my grandma's with her Lab, never any issues. Now when we visit my dads house (where he's been going about 2x a week since I brought him home at 9 weeks old) he's always just a SPAZ!!! They have 2 dogs, 2 cats and it's my dad, stepmom and little 6 year old brother there with a big fenced in yard and pool etc. So yes it's a lot of people and alot of fun. It's almost like Jackson's vacation home or something haha. I have exercised him like crazy before going over there (dog park for 2-3 hours before, or a long walk, etc) and while that will calm him down a little bit, he's still just so much more hyper over there. He's so laidback in every other part of his life. It's like he's learned this is how he's supposed to be over there... plus my dads 2 dogs bark at everything and they're not the best behaved so the 3 of them feed off each other. My dad just ordered the bark repeller everyone raved about so we will see if it helps the barking with the 3. Jackson never barks except at dads house! The only time he barks at our regular house is when someone comes to the door. So after this long post, would giving a little rescue remedy before visiting my dads help in this situation, or is it mainly just for stress??

First thing I would do is tether your dog to you while your there and only give a little bit of play time with the other dogs. You have better control when they are tethered to you and you can teach him "no bark" while doing so. While he is running around if he gets to rambunctious you can tether him to you for awhile. The bark repeller has to be used while training a dog not to bark. And for a lot of dogs it doesn't even work. Then for some it will work for a little while and then it quits working on the dog. That is what happened with a couple of my dogs, and a couple others it never worked. The idea of the bark repeller is to only have to use it until the dog is trained. You must use a command when training a dog no matter which method you use. That way once they learn you never even have to bring out the BR again, and your dog will respond to your command. I see a lot of people say they only have to show the dog the BR after awhile and the dog responds. But by then they should only have to give the command "no bark" and the dog should respond. No more bark repeller.. Another method is to teach your dog to speak on command. Once you teach a dog to speak then you can teach them not to speak (no bark).

He's never reactive to other dogs ever, I mean we can walk by fences of barking dogs and he could care less. He loves every dog he ever meets. He's really an obedient dog 99% of the time. It's just my dads house. I really believe it's just the energy over there... and it's hard to have to control every person and dog and cats energy by myself lol. I do agree that he has always been able to get away with this behavior over there, and I think I will try maybe leashing him up at times and getting him calm. Thanks for your tips and advice! I was just hoping I could find a little natural aid to help me out when it comes to his hyperness, because it's literally pretty much only at my dads house where he's in this overly hyper state of mind. Everywhere else we go, he's like a really mellow dog. He's always got energy and is up for an adventure but he's also always willing to lounge around with me and watch tv or take a nap. It's like we get to my dads house and some switch goes off in his head that turns him into a TOTALLY different dog!! It just blows my mind. I'm sure it's my fault; it's always the humans fault haha. I think I need to work on my energy and give him more rules and boundaries when over dads house. I do think he may be stressed out sometimes when over there, as much fun that he is, sometimes it seems like he feels the need to protect the place... maybe he feels more dominant in that house? because in general he's a submissive dog, but I see more dominant traits come out when visiting dads. However we visited at my dads place for a few hours last month when they were on vacation so it was just me, Jackson and the 2 cats over there and he was totally fine. No hyperness, no barking, nothing, so I think it's just the excitement of it all. Crazy!! I will stop taking over this RR thread now with my problems! On the other hand, I did find this last night while googling: Good Dog Pet Calming Supplement at PETCO All-natural remedy for dogs that are unruly or hyper Helps make your dog happy and content Safe, veterinarian recommended Ready-to-use, just add to your pet's drinking water

Just wanted to come back and update how this new med is working for my Bog. He's been taking it twice a day for almost 3 weeks and he will not sit in the car quietly. Which is a HUGE improvement. He does much better in the front seat of the car then in the back and it is a work in progress. Last night we had bad thunderstorms and he still shook but was not nearly as bad as in the past. I also put a Tshirt on him and that seemed to help as well. The one variable yesterday was that our air conditioner was out so during the storm we had the entire house open. The boomers even made me jump several times. I did notice that unlike in the past he was able to sit on my lap which we could never do even with the air conditioner running. So that is an improvement as well. The labeling on the package said that they need to take it for 4 to 8 weeks to see the full benefit so I am going to keep giving it to him to see if I continue to see more improvement. Hope anyone following along will be helped by Bogey's experince as well as improvements.

| Sleepytime tonic: Herbal elixir helps to calm down a nervous, anxious or overactive dog OK Jodi, I know I'm a little late on this thread but what about this? I was considering it for Brady before he was put on other meds. I never tried it but maybe you can check it out. I LOVE this line of products and have been very happy with everything I have had of theirs before, granted I have only used topical things like shampoo and conditioner.

she did it yesterday because a smoke alarm went off on the TV. ugh it was only like two beeps and she immediately jumped off the couch and started shaking. so i put the shirt on her and i think it did help. she never went into the panting stage.
